Just a small heads up.

Although there is still a lot of uncertainty, it looks like Cat 5 hurricane Irma might be heading towards southern and center Florida.

Winstep is hosted at the Hivelocity data center in Tampa, FL, and while they have really robust facilities (reinforced concrete buildings built to withstand the severest of weather, UPS systems, diesel generators and fuel for several days) and are making preparations for the worst, there is still a possibility that connectivity might be impacted.

So, if Winstep suddenly goes off the grid sometime during the weekend, you already know why. If the worst happens, we have onsite and offsite backups, which should prevent any data loss and help getting Winstep back online ASAP.

For anyone on the path of this hurricane, please stay safe.

Quick update: Irma's outer bands are making their way in to Tampa now.

We're still here, of course, but seeing the situation getting progressively worse from Friday onwards in terms of where Irma is heading, we decided to setup a secondary backup server 2,000 miles away from the disaster area. We've been working round-the-clock throughout the weekend to make sure that, if the worst happens, any downtime will be minimized.

Again, to all the people on the path of this hurricane, good luck and stay safe!

And all is well when it ends well. :)

Despite Irma's extensive damage to Florida, both of Hivelocity's data centers in Tampa made it through without loss of service. TPA1 is currently on utility power, TPA2 on generator (Winstep's server is on TPA1). Hivelocity has 5,000 gallons of diesel on storage, so that should be more than enough to hold TPA2 through until utility power is restored.
