On my system I terminate Windows via an AutoHotkey script that writes some information to a file before the appropriate Windows command is executed.
As long as I haven't closed Xtreme via the menu item Exit Windows complains about 'background programs' to be closed. In addition it seams that at the next start of Xtreme takes quite some time (initialising).

Is there a method to 'call' Xtreme and terminate safely, before Windows kills it?

Not really. Is Xtreme included in that list of 'background programs' then need to be closed? Xtreme should exit normally and cleanly as soon as it receives a notification from Windows that the system is about to shutdown.
