I was wondering if it was at all possible to just use the widgets without the workshelf. I mean it can still run, cause I know its required for the widgets to run, but is there anyway to disable to actual workshelf part? I only use the widgets.. best I've ever seen! :)

As you said, WorkShelf is required for the widgets to run. This said, you can minimize its presence on the screen so it's basically un-noticeable: in the Shelf Preferences tab of WorkShelf Preferences, change 'Collapse to Tabs' to 'Collapse to Frames', enable 'Start Collapsed' and disable 'Edge Bump Activation'.
