Hi, I recently built a new system running Windows XP 64 bit. I am happy to see that WinStep Extreme runs fine.

The only problem I've had is that the location of the Control Panel must be different. I see Icons show up on the Workshelf, but they're icons of newly added control panel apps, not the "normal" ones, like system, and display, etc.

Any idea how I could change that?

Thanks..

I would like to help, but at this point I have no idea what the problem might be... Both WorkShelf and NextSTART use the CSIDL_CONTROLS constant to access the Control Panel virtual folder, as they should (sorry if this sounds a bit technical).

What puzzles me is your reference to 'newly added Control Panel apps'. What are they? Maybe WS and NS are only listing 32 bit Control Panel applets?

Thanks...the ones that show up are Directory Opus, Adobe Gamma, Outlook mail profiles, Marvell Virtual cable tester, SoundMAX, Speech, and Text services.

Most of those are programs I've installed, with the exception of Speech and Text services.

The other thing that's strange is that I was able to create a hotspot on the desktop that launches the control panel, (run internal command|control panel) and it works. Are Workshelf and hotspots calling the same location?

Different things: the internal command simply invokes Explorer to show the contents of the Control Panel.

Hi Jorge,

i have the same problem and it seems that it has something to do with 32 bit and 64 bit dll.

I don't know how Nextsart is enumerating? the control panel, but may be you understand the following kb

Thanks for the link to the knowledge base article!

Looks like the missing Control Panel icons problem is unsolvable then, since it is actually a 32 bit/64 bit system problem (I would actually call this a Windows bug, but ah well).

There is one workaround, although definitely not perfect: create a new Regular shelf and name it Control Panel. Now open c:\windows\system32 in Explorer and drag & drop every *.cpl file you find into the new shelf.

Alternatively, you might also try showing the Windows Control Panel in Explorer and dragging every Control Panel item in it into the Regular shelf you just created. No garanties this will work though, but it is worth a try.

Hi Jorge,

there is an other solution which is working.....

I have created in Nextsart a new menu item:

Command: Run internal command
Command Name: Control Panel

The only problem: it opens a new window... is it not possible to expand this stuff?

By the was to make your life not to easy:

When will be Winstep available in 64 bit?

No. That same internal command also exists in WorkShelf, by the way.

 So far 64 bit platforms have been quite a flop, no comparison to what happened when everybody switched from 16 to 32 bit almost all at once back in the Win3.x/Win95 days.

I also remember that Win95 was basically able to run every 16 bit legacy application under the sun, something which does not happen with the current 64 bit OS versions in relation to 32 bit applications - there are far too many compatibility problems at this point that Microsoft must solve first.

For now, the only thing I have to worry about is achieving 100% Vista compatibility. The 32 bit version, of course.

Unfortunatly, for anyone wanting to run 64 bit (my self included), it's hard for developers of software and drivers to get behind it because of the realtive lack of users.

Further, it's definatly a chicken and egg probelm as well, we need the drivers and software to promote the environement but no real MS backing for the developers. 64 bit, especially on the desktop, is MS's red headed step child, possibly to quiet down the Linux / Mac crowd.

This may improve under Vista 32 vs 64 bit, especially since most retail systems in the US have Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD 64 processors in them, but I wouldn't hold my breath for MS encouraging the developers with any incentives to push 64 bit development.

MS says they have sold 20 million copies of Vista since it first came out.

Other than to all the big OEM's like HP I don't see how, though.

I would have thought we would see XP in the retail stores being discounted through about July / August; but,, when Vista released there was no big box retail stores selling anything with XP on it - overnight all XP boxes were off the shelves.

Wonder what it cost MS to pull that one off.
