I love the new NextStart and Workshelf! One question: I'm having a problem with the Email Checker. I'm getting an error in the Response section. It does not animate or give me a sound. I'm not sure if it is really checking or not. Can anybody help? Thanks.

What's the error being reported? The normal response when there are no pending messages is '0 Messages, 0 Bytes'.

Do the other internet related modules (atomic clock and weather module) work properly?

ERR invalid command

The atomic clock and weather modules work just fine.

Hmmm... Are you sure you specified the correct POP3 server address for incoming mail and that it uses port 110?

When communicating with a POP3 server, WorkShelf sends 4 commands:

USER <username>
PASS <password>
STAT
QUIT

All four are basic commands and should be recognized.

There is one way you could test what might be going wrong or what command is being rejected: if you are using NT, W2k or XP, open a command prompt window and type in

telnet <yourpop3server> 110
user <yourusername>
pass <yourpassword>
stat
quit

the server will reply to each of the above commands. To help you, here is a sample of a real session (without revealing the real username and password, of course):

telnet pop.netcabo.pt 110

+OK <Welcome to POP.NETCABO.PT>
user xxxxx
+OK
pass xxxxx
+OK User successfully logged on.
stat
+OK 0 0
quit
+OK Microsoft Exchange 2000 POP3 server version 6.0.6487.0 signing off.

Connection to host lost.

---

See which command fails and then get back to me. If you think the above is too complicated for you, the alternative is to email your server, username and password details to me (support@winstep.net) so I can try it out from here. Personally I would never send my details to anyone, but it is really up to you.

1. I'm using WIN98SE.

2. I've left the User and Password blank. Do I need this? If so, do I just make one up?

Well, guess that's what's wrong then. Usernames and passwords cannot be blank. Your ISP gave you a username and a password to access your email account, and that is what you have to type into WorkShelf.
