Are there any reports of what appears to be a ghost image of an existing dock appearing behind the active dock? The one on top has to be repositioned and then deleted. The ghost becomes the new active dock. I have been using Ultimate for years and this just happened several times over the last two days.

Running Windows 10. All updates installed.

Thank you for your help.

Jon

I have actually seen that happen once or twice here, but I was never able to reproduce in order to figure out what happened and fix it - I think it is related to monitor or screen resolution changes. Did you do that in the past couple of days?

Also, just to make sure, are you using the latest version (v25.6) ?

Thank you Jorge.

Yes, I am using the latest version and have not experienced this ever before this version. Upon starting up today, two of three docks are completely gone. Here yesterday, gone today. Is there any way of getting them back?

EDIT: I just noticed that Ultimate was not registered. This is new. I can assure you that every other time I had the described problem with the docks, Ultimate acknowledged that I was registered. The reason I checked previously is I am aware that many features are not available in unregistered versions. I registered, no problem. But when starting Ultimate, I now have a ghost copy of the remaining dock.

Even the unregistered version of Nexus Ultimate is fully functional.

However, one thing: you say this only started happening a couple of days ago, but the v25.6 release is already 12 days old or so.

You know what DID come out a couple of days ago? Windows 11 Patch Tuesday, KB5062553. I read somewhere MS changed something related to windows popping up with a wrong size and/or position after coming back from sleep. Perhaps it is related.

One thing I need to know for sure: open Preferences, click the version number in the top right corner of the About tab. In the Versions dialog that pops up, what is the COMPLETE version and build number of your Nexus Ultimate?

As for the missing docks, I'm afraid that if you actually DELETED the ghost docks from the context menu, you actually deleted the ghost *and* the real dock. The only thing "ghostly" about those docks is the screen object, because the internal structure is shared between the ghost and the real thing. Delete one or the other and they're both gone, sorry.

Do you have a backup of your config?

Also, does the ghost copy of the remaining dock you mention appear in the Docks & Shelves tab in Preferences? What exactly is there?

Finally, when you say "restarting Ultimate" does the ghost appear even if you exit and then restart Ultimate?

I don't remember exactly when I updated my installation, but it was significantly after 25.6 was released released.

Windows 11 worries me and I have not upgraded. Will do so eventually but I have some critical programs that run well on 10 but have varying successes with 11. I even delayed upgrading Ultimate because you wrote that there were some features that were not yet compatible with 11.

25.06.1195

Ultimate has been bulletproof for years. Never had to.

Yes. It seems to be a fully functional dock. Until I finish work and the end of the day, shut down Windows and restart the next day. Then it is gone.

This morning on restart, I checked and Ultimate lost my license. It was still present in the proper folder, but it did not display that it was registered to me.

I think I am going to uninstall and start fresh.

So, did you get to do that? I don't think it will help though.

There is something wrong with what is being done when the system returns from sleep. I am not seeing duplicate docks here but sometimes the desktop modules seem to become invisible. I have to give a deep look into the code.

Also, is Ultimate registered again?

What do you mean by "then it is gone" ?

I did and made sure my system was completely scrubbed of the install. So far this appears to have fixed the problem (not saying for how long, but it has been several days...).

I may have something for you to consider. The problem appeared after installing the update issued on June 29. This file differs in size from the file I downloaded on July 11 and issued on July 3. Both say they are the same version.

Yes, there were a couple of serious bugs in the very first release of v25.6 that I was only made aware after the release, but those would only affect a handful of people so rather than making another update immediately after (which would piss a lot of people off) I simply issued what is called a "silent update" (i.e. fixed the bugs and silently re-released v25.6, so users who downloaded it from then on would not experience the bugs).

That's one of the reasons why I am working so hard on releasing v25.7 ASAP, so everyone gets a fixed version (and hopefully with no new bugs ehehe)

This said, I don't recall changing anything in the part of the code that I suspect is responsible for random "ghost" docks and invisible desktop modules.

Backups are like insurances. You never need them... until you do.

Adding support for "per-monitor DPI awareness" in v25.6 meant changing so much code that it was nearly impossible for bugs NOT to creep their ugly heads despite how much I checked for issues. Too many changes and too many different configurations to be able to re-test fully. That there were so few was actually a little miracle (now imagine if Microsoft had done this to Windows with their current - lack of - QA :D )

Sure, but is is more exciting to live on the edge. Still, lesson learned. I should be treating my setup as all my other data.

Agreed. I just hope that I am not premature in assuming this problem is resolved.

Thank you for your patience and help.

Sincerely - unfortunately I think you are... it's a random problem, possibly due to some racing conditions when the system is busy coming back from sleep...

As I said, before I release v25.7 I will be doing an in-depth analysis at what could be causing this and fix every possible cause I can think of.
