ok, prolly in the wrong thread, but wanted to get the out before they left my brain.

Way back in the late 90's - early 00's when i started with winstep, i recall there being on the webs a massive library of nextstep/afterstep/windomaker icons... anyone know if it is still out there? I would love to grab a copy (or build one).

2) There used to be a file manager, again back in the day, that was the spitting image of the one from NextStep. is there anything similar in look today? If not, could be a nice add in to future winstep releases.

Now, folks may say to use windowblinds, which I do... but modern applications i find too variable in their ability to be skinned by WB, often leading to a disjointed look (im looking at you Chrome...).

ok, thats all.

1. I think Nexter might be able to help you with that one. If not, I'll try to locate my own NeXT icon collection so I can upload it to the Winstep web site.

2. Look for Directory Opus.

:D

Happy user for more that 2 decades.

1) I do have all the original OPENSTEP 4.2 ' - still have all my original CDs1 - icons, including the developer IDE ones. (Though not really useful outside their natural environment, to be honest.) Now at the time of NT4/Win9x I did convert most of them to .ico and I think .ping format, but without their natural transparency as Windblows didn't support transparency yet, so pretty messy. The originals need to be converted to .ping with transparency. But first you'd have to adjust the gamma (by a factor of 1.3, IIRC) as NeXT used a different gamma to Windoze and the icons would look far too dark in Windows. (Just like they did at first in Gnustep/Windowmaker - they soon cottoned on to the gamma factor and changed everything. :) )

Now the problem. The icons are on a pretty old and possibly half knackered backup drive, somewhere. When I can find a bit more time I could perhaps try and recover them. At least, I hope it's just on a NTFS or Linux format disk. :)

2)I think it was called Windows Fileviewer, and I heard there's a new version of it around. It was grreat when you were still using NeXTSTEP/OPENSTEP, but in reality, a dual panel type file manager based on Directory Opus (originally on Amiga) is more useful in the modern age. Tried the modern Windows version of DOpus but found it to be a right PITA. There are lots of DOpus clones - usually free and open source - around that are far more user friendly.
