Can you check if the problem you mentioned about the weather module eventually becoming opaque has been fixed by one of the latest versions? If not, please let me know exactly what happens.

as it was it would randomly lose its transparency (maybe while updating, wasn't able to pinpoint) but would become transparent again after mouseover

IIRC, I worked on that stuff a couple of versions back, so it should work properly now - which is why I was asking you to check. :)

yes it seems to work fine now, i haven't been using the module because i got used to the dock version, although when you click to expand the dock icon, today's reading often shows -/x, not displaying the high temperature number, while the popup that appears after display does. but it could be an issue with the data provided as i have sometimes noticed that winstep cant get any weather info for my location for some period

WsxMMTimer is a really, really, simple DLL responsible for providing the 10 ms timer resolution necessary for some of the animations. It does this by using the system's multimedia timers.

The DLL itself crashing with an Access Violation error is very strange because precisely because of its simplicity. Everything that is happening there is very strange, none of the crashes are consistent or reproducible.

In this case the error happens apparently because a call was made to a function in that DLL when the DLL was not loaded or already unloaded. Problem is, that DLL is (should be) always loaded. It doesn't get unloaded until the application quits.

Again, the most common suggestion for this problem happening can be summed up as 'Tends to be an environmental problem with shoddy anti-malware on the top of the list'. In other words, 3rd party drivers/AV solution injecting code into another application's process and then playing havoc with it. The injected code crashes or does something that causes the main application to crash.

Were you doing anything with the Winstep application when it crashed?

not this time, and not most(or all, cant be sure) of the other times, could it be tied to glow when updating animations for weather/email/clock, or animations from cpu/ram/net meters?

I've edited my original message above with a bit more info while you were replying, sorry. Read it again.

I don't recommend going back, sincerely, but if you really want to you can still download v16.9 from Cnet's Download.com:

Well, if the old version starts crashing now too when before it didn't, at least you will know for sure that the culprit is some 3rd party application.

If it doesn't... welll... lool

haven't had any problems with avast and winstep before, and there was no update for avast for a while now,

ill run through scans for malware tonight although no other problems appear

well i intend to rollback only temporary to see if the issue happens with the old version, and stay on the 16.9 only as a last option

another, pressed the wrong button on the error message so i pulled the info out of the event viewer:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Winstep\WorkShelf.exe
WsxMMTimer.dll

if you would it find useful i extracted the event files so i can upload them somewhere, before updating to 16.12 workshelf would crash maybe once a month according to event viewer and it was a different dll in the few crashes i saw scrolling down, not sure if the EV caught all crashes since i cant find the error i pasted before (there are only WsxMMTimer.dll and 'unknown' errors logged)
