For anyone affected by this who wants to know what happened: because of the 'insecure login' warnings in the latest versions of Firefox and Chrome, we decided to automatically re-direct HTTP (non secure) accesses to the Winstep forums to HTTPS (secure connection).
Unfortunately there was a mistake configuring the server which was not noticed immediately by those who did it: instead of only re-directing forums.winstep.net to HTTPS, the whole website (www.winstep.net) ended up being re-directed instead.
Since the SSL certificate is only valid for the forums.winstep.net sub-domain, all HTTP accesses to www.winstep.net started failing. For various technical reasons only the forums need/can be moved to a secure connection.
Anyway, this server misconfiguration is being corrected as we speak.
