BitDefender. eh?

That AV software lately seems to be causing more problems than it solves. Check the first post in the Beta forums (although that was caused by BitDefender's 'excellent' ransomware 'protection').

Try temporarily disabling it before checking for updates. Want to bet all your problems magically go away?

Also, you're running the beta, but the beta did not update the Winstep Update Manager (WSUpdate.exe), which is where that message comes from. It's still the same version found in v17.1.

The message is a Winsock error that means the connection has not been allowed to go through, and that is usually because of a Firewall.

Nexus and the wsxservice are explicitly permitted and the firewall is permitting traffic with any protocol in both directions. I tried disabling and still got the same results. You said I am running a beta version of Nexus. Is there a link from which I can download a released version of "NeXuS Ultimate"

You have to allow 'WSUpdate.exe' in the Firewall. That's the Winstep application that checks for updates and downloads them when there is one.

As for the beta, stay put, it has no issues. Besides, the official release will be any day now - just let the Winstep Update Manager take care of that for you.

I backed off to the previous release of Nexus (17.1.1064) and explicitly allowed update service. It saw an update but gave me the following error. I'm getting closer.

I wouldn't say you're getting closer, you just turned a really simple and quick issue to fix into a complicated one. Ehehe. :P

See what lack of patience gets you?

Exactly HOW did you backed off to the previous release? What did you do?

Also, can you please post a screenshot of what is inside your

C:\Users\Public\Documents\WinStep\Versions\

folder?

Okay, so I take the "Low road" and you take the "High road". At last, we have success.
Let's pretend this never happened.

Yeah, Bitdefender has been a PITA lately, especially since I'm running Windows RS4 (Slow ring). I have 570 days left on my Bitdefender license. Windows™ doesn't acknowledge that I have a third-party antivirus installed. I had to go into Policy Editor and disable "Windows Defender" in order to allow Bitdefender to run at all, but it's not working correctly

Personally I run ESET Smart Security. Never game me any trouble.

Actually, it did, once, a long time ago when it was still called NOD32: it flagged a Winstep application with a false positive. So I wrote to them complaining and they solved the problem by making me a kind of 'honorary' ESET beta tester.

This was over 11 years ago. Since then, no issues whatsoever or problems with Winstep software. The thing just works.
