Post subject:  Error

Have been using Nexus for about a year, with no difficulties. In the last week, I have been getting the following: Error: Access Violation, you may be able to restart. Retry/Cancel. Upon retry the program starts with no problem. Read the post about Bitdefender and though I use Avast Internet Security I set the exceptions noted, with no result. Any ideas on what the problem may be. I also uninstalled/reinstalled Nexus with same result.

Devil is always in the details, Raego. :)

1. What version of Nexus are you running?
2. Is it the free version or Nexus Ultimate?
3. What version of Windows?
4. What happens if you exit Nexus and restart it manually? Do you get the error then too?
5. When the error pops up, is the dock already visible on the screen?
6. What happens if you make a backup of your settings (Preferences -> Advanced tab -> Backup), reset everything to Factory Default (Preferences -> Advanced tab -> Troubleshooting Options -> Reset Everything) and then restart Nexus? Do you still get the same error?

Thought of some of those details as I went to sleep last night

1. What version of Nexus are you running? 18.1
2. Is it the free version or Nexus Ultimate? Free
3. What version of Windows? Windows 7 Home Premium SP1
4. What happens if you exit Nexus and restart it manually? Do you get the error then too? No, Error occurs at system start up.
5. When the error pops up, is the dock already visible on the screen? No
6. What happens if you make a backup of your settings (Preferences -> Advanced tab -> Backup), reset everything to Factory Default (Preferences -> Advanced tab -> Troubleshooting Options -> Reset Everything) and then restart Nexus? Do you still get the same error? No, as stated in #4, error occurs at system start.

Do you have the Fast Boot option enabled (General tab of Preferences)?

Ok, but what happens if you do a factory default (Reset Everything) and THEN restart the system? Same error?

After you tested this, enable Fast Boot, press OK to close Preferences, and then restart Windows. Still the same error?

Any idea what might have changed in your system in the past week? I don't think this is an issue with Winstep software per se (especially because it only happens after a system restart).

Diagnosing something like this, especially because it's something that only happens at system startup, is going to be very difficult.

Apologies for not getting back to you sooner. After trying the solutions you have suggested, have decided (as you have) that the problem lies not with Nexus, but elsewhere in the system. Will be taking a look at my startup programs and possibly doing a system restore to a date before the problem started. This was and is not a major problem as all I have to do is click retry and I'm good to go.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Well, I think *something* external is causing the Access Violation error, but those errors are always best avoided: that error means the application was trying to access memory that was no longer available, and even though you have the Retry option the application might be in an undetermined state after that (private memory might have become corrupted - or not).

So, the ideal would be to pinpoint exactly *where* that error is triggered (even if it would not happen under normal conditions) and then code around it in order to prevent the situation from happening in the first place.

So, because the dock is not already visible and only becomes visible after clicking the Retry button, we know the error occurs somewhere during the initialization of the Winstep application - but I need more clues, initialization is a very long process and I still don't know exactly where the error happens.

I take it you already tried resetting everything to factory default and then rebooting the system? This would be another clue as to whether the error is caused by a particular setting or something else.
