Hello, a pleased new user here and this issue doesn't seem to be major. Below is a snip of Reliability Monitor and almost every day, wsupdate.exe/Winstep Update Manager "stop working." Every red mark under Applications is from Winstep. Only using the dock at the moment and it loads just fine despite the delay. Fast startup is disabled. Windows 10 v.1803 fully updated. No malware.

Manual check for updates says all Winstep apps in my comp. are currently up-to-date. WSUpdate.exe version 18.02.0188/Winstep.exe 18.03.0116. Product version:18.03.1091.

The errors don't seem to affect any functionality. I won't enable Fast Startup for this machine but I do see it is recommended by Winstep to enable it. Thanks for any info.

This doesn't make much sense.

WsUpdate.exe is the Winstep Update Manager, as you noticed, and when 'Check for updates' is enabled it launches *silently* every 24 hours to check for updates. In this mode it only prompts you if there are new updates, otherwise it launches and exits silently.

Now, if the Winstep Update Manager was crashing, it should crash when you make a manual check for updates too - but according to you, it doesn't.

What are your Automatic Update settings set to in the Advanced tab of Preferences?

Also, what happens if you run CMD.EXE (Command Prompt), go to

C:\Program Files (x86)\Winstep\

and type

wsupdate.exe verbose

?

Nevermind... I think I know what might be causing this.

Download a new build of WsUpdate.exe from HERE, unzip the file into

C:\Program Files (x86)\Winstep\

so it replaces the older version there, then please let me know in a couple of days if the crashes are still happening.

OK, just to show the result when you right-click the dock and then select Nexus/Info/Check for updates:

I was just going by manual checks and the resultant messages like above. I downloaded from your link and extracted the updated .exe into the existing Winstep folder so that the WSUpdate.exe version is now 18.05.0189. Also, the product I have is paid for and registered appropriately. I will evaluate and post back in a few days as requested.

In silent mode the Winstep Update Manager wasn't cleaning up properly on exit, I think that is what was causing the crashes. Not a biggie because it had already finished doing its thing anyway - I'm just surprised you never got an error message.

Possibly because the crash happened when the process was exiting already. So, silent update, silent crash. :)

Unfortunately, the "crash" recurred today despite introducing the updated .exe. Winstep has never notified of the failure, though Windows always does. Also, doing a manual check for updates now doesn't show any message at all. Below are snips of the Event Viewer error and a snip showing the updated .exe from the above download. It doesn't seem serious but I, like many probably, don't like to see errors with frequency.

Anything else I can do? To add as an edit: for Automatic Updates in Advanced tab: Notify me when new updates are available and notify me of language updates are activated. Insofar as running the command prompt, if this is still necessary, more specific instructions are asked for. Thanks.

Yes, you were right, I could reproduce the issue here on a Windows 10 VM and this time it seems like I really fixed it.

Please download again from the link above. New file version is 18.5.190

OK, it's been a few days and that pesky wsupdate .exe error hasn't popped up yet so it's OK, I guess. It was happening almost daily before.

Can the message box to acknowledge update checks be restored?

Thanks.

You want it to ask you before checking for updates?! No idea why you would want that, but

Preferences -> Advanced tab -> Enable 'Prompt me before checking for new updates'

If you enable that, the application will only check for updates once per week, instead of every day.

Otherwise, if you mean the message box saying that there are currently no updates available, that only appears when you make a manual check for updates by clicking on the 'Check for Updates' button. Automatic updates do not generate any prompt (unless there actually are updates available).

Anyway, thanks for the feedback! :)
