It was my understanding that if I purchased Winstep Extreme that after 1 year I would keep my product but the lose the updates. Is this not the case? The problem I'm having is every day I get multiple popups to renew (have turned alerts off, didn't work) and I have to register daily. However, when I open the folder for my reg key and apply it doesn't seem to work and it has my taskbar settings on lock down. I'm not one to renew all my software every year since doing so would require a second full time job, but this is just way too annoying for me so if there is a solution, OR if this is the way it is set up, please let me know so I can make an informed decision on this particular piece of software. Thanks in advance.

So, just to make sure: your copy of Winstep Xtreme remains registered and fully functional, right?

Because one thing is the shareware reminder (i.e.; the application is running as a 30 day trial), another is the renewal reminder.

The problem, if I understood correctly, is that you are being hounded by *multiple* reminders to renew throughout the day (the keyword here being multiple, which I find a bit odd because the *default* action - i.e.; if all you do is press Ok - of the reminder is to only remind you again the next day).

Do you restart Winstep Xtreme or your PC multiple times per day?

Now that you mention it, yes I do have to restart a couple of times a day. Also it is both, the shareware reminder, which I can't seem to register my product key in, and the renewal reminder. Biggest problem is I can't access my taskbar settings - when I open preferences I'm on the register tab and can't access any of the other tabs.

Yeah, that definitely should not happen unless you downloaded a version already outside your 1 year of free updates.

Can you please post a screenshot of the About tab of WorkShelf Preferences?

If you can't get to it, go to

C:\Program Files (x86)\Winstep\

right click on the WorkShelf.exe file, then select Properties, then click on the Details tab and paste the file version here.

Thanks for the screenshot - v18.1 is well within your period of free upgrades. In fact, even v18.3 is, so let me know if you want to upgrade to that version, I'll send you a link to it.

Let's completely ignore the upgrade reminder for the moment and focus on the shareware reminder - I have no idea why Xtreme suddenly thinks it is no longer registered in your system (perhaps interference from your AV software?), all I know is that it shouldn't happen.

1. How often does it lose registration?

2. Do you see a red dialog when that happens?

3. Does Xtreme register again when that happens and you click the Register button in the Register tab of Preferences? If not, how do you get it to pop up as registered again?

1.The window pops up every restart, I click open folder, apply, then OK.

2. There is no red dialog

3. The steps in answer 1 have no effect - it does not register.

It started I'm guessing about 2 weeks ago and I've had the same AV software for much longer, which I did check to make sure there was no conflict.

This popped up 5 minutes after post....

Plot thickens.

Want to be absolutely sure of this though: does this mean the only way to register the application again is for you to double click the license key you received in the email, and that clicking the Register button in the Register tab of Preferences has ZERO effect?

I had already asked this question in point 3 of my post above (what do you do then) but you seem to have missed it - I need to make sure I understand what is happening there. :)

That is correct, it has no effect. To simplify, I have to disable NexStart to use the taskbar. I can access the workshelf and the dock with no problem, but not the start or task menus

Oh, I hadn't realized this was only happening with NextSTART. Now it's even weirder than before, but it's beginning to sound like something changed the NextSTART executable, which makes it fail the self-integrity check (but then you should get a red warning dialog, not just the shareware reminder).

Ok, do me a favor: please post a screenshot of the contents of your

C:\Users\Public\Documents\WinStep\Licenses\

folder.

Then, next time it happens, click the 'Open Folder' button in the Registration tab of NextSTART Preferences and compare to see if there are any differences in content (or make a new screenshot and post here).

Once that is done, restart Winstep Xtreme. Is NextSTART registered now?

Once we've established this, it would probably be better for you to upgrade to v18.3 to see if that fixes the issue (and if it is happening because something changed the NextSTART executable as I suspect, then this should do it).

Also, the version of Winstep Xtreme you are currently running - did you download it directly from the Winstep web site or from somewhere else?

I do not believe it is registered and I downloaded directly Winstep.

Well, believing is one thing, knowing quite another. If you open NextSTART Preferences now (CTRL+F12), does it show as registered?

Also, do you have the Windows setting to HIDE file extensions disabled (IMO, the MOST STUPID decision ever made by Microsoft)? Just trying to make sure that the key file is indeed XtremeBasic.key and not XtremeBasic.key.key .

If in doubt, right click the key file to make sure and select Properties.

No, it says to register my copy. File extensions are not hidden. A lot of things over at Microsoft are apparently dictated by toddlers.

LOL. So true.

Anyway, I still think this is happening because something modified the NextSTART executable. So here is how we fix that problem (or at least rule it out):

1. Download v18.3 from HERE.

2. DO NOT uninstall anything. Just exit all running Winstep applications.

3. Unzip and run setup.

4. Double check you are running v18.3 (About tab of *both* NextSTART and WorkShelf Preferences).

5. Double check that BOTH applications remain registered (it will say so in the About tab, although in red because of the expired renewal period)

Then we wait to see if the *Shareware* warning pops up again (ignore the Renewal warning for now).

You can see what is new in v18.3 in relation to v18.1 HERE.

Installed the update - the work shelf is 18.3 but the task bar is still on lockdown and will not register so I don't know what it is for certain. I disabled AV software and windows defender(another MS fubar)and tried to register again but no luck so I really don't know what else to do.
