Post subject:  Barred Metering Modules

Having used a theme for a few weeks now that I'd designed with the metering modules (CPU, RAM, NET, Battery) using bars that go right to left (instead of the more usual left to right), I find that this somehow feels - and I stress *feels* - far more natural to me. And so I'm about to incorporate this into more themes. (Histographs run right to left anyway!) Any opinions?

I'm not sure if the multi-state type metering displays allow for a similar directional change, not having used those before and not being particularly keen on them myself (nor the dial ones), but if not, certainly would be good to have the option.

Most of all, of course, I think we really ought to have the option of an anti-clockwise clock, and also a single-pass 24-hr one. The level of interest this seems to have generated in another thread would seem to indicate at least some interest in these.

So, I think this is something Freud would have no problems explaining, Ric <evil laugh> : now that you've grown somewhat older and are trying to come to terms with it, you would like to turn the clock backwards. The anti-clockwise clock (and the bars growing in the opposite direction) is just an expression of such desire. :D

How's that for an interpretation, eh?

LOL! Well, nice try Jorge, but not quite the way that Mr. Freud would necessarily see it. :)

The 'anti-clockwise' clock has a tradition about as long as the history of mechanical clocks itself. In Jewish culture e.g. it had a great prevalence even and is still not that uncommon. Essentially, 'clockwise' is a purely cultural, northern hemisphere thing - it's the way a sun dial's shadow moves, and so was adopted by clockmakers. In the southern hemisphere, a sun dial's shadow moves in an 'anti-clockwise' direction. So, there's no 'right' or 'wrong' way, it's really quite arbitrary, ultimately.

Again, the single-pass 24-hr clock (clockwise and anti-) has a long tradition - see the (newly restored, btw) famous Prague Astronomical Clock for an outstanding example, even with its repeated Roman numerals, that I showed elsewhere.

As for the bar meters, again, they're not moving backwards for me. OK, I'll grant that my being left-handed might come into it.

Oh and I've done a 'backwards' moving clock* - it's got an 'anti-clockwise' face but moves, of course, clockwise. :P

I have no desire to turn back the clock - go through all that hassle of adolescence etc. again? No thanks! :P No way. Besides, I'm very comfortable with my current age and have nothing to come to terms with. Mind you, I wouldn't mind 'un-inventing' a few things. At the latest, perhaps starting with Einstein's theories of relativity. None of that, no nukes. :) (And might have put physicists and cosmologists on a freer track and perhaps let them come to the right conclusions by now instead of the total chaos of conflicting theories.) Microchips and personal computers - computers should have stayed, at best, house-sized clunky machines based on valve technology. Hence, no dumbphones, no PCs, no tablets, no universal surveillance, no 'thought police' social media, etc. etc. (And perhaps we'd still have some good manners or 'breeding'!) Oh, and the suffragettes and feminism! Give women an inch and they want miles! Patriarchy is hard-wired into our genes, and one of these days there's going to be a big backlash against women. It's never been about equality, it's about superiority. Equality only applies when it suits them. Feckin' unnatural, the whole damn thing. Still, 'kill' one inventor, and another will pop up with the same thing, sooner or later. :/ So, can't really be done anyway.

All in all, I just like doing things differently, thinking differently. And, having always been a real life surrealist, I like to have incongruousness around my 'arty farty' type themes, which are based on some of my old highly incongruous digital art images being recycled as wallpapers.

So, hopefully having thoroughly 'debunked' your theory Jorge - bring on the 'anti-clockwise' and 24-hr options some time! LOL!
