So here's my problem.

I just bought Winstep extreme because RocketDock is sadly showing signs of getting real old. It becomes increasingly sluggish over time after each boot.

So....Here's how my RocketDock looks:

Here's how Winstep Nexus looks, which is unusable, tiny icons and no text on them also in vertical mode is unusable for me, even some icons are off screen and I cannot access:

In both cases I'm opening the "Tool" sub dock which is not even the one with most icons.

A shelf is not the answer for me, as I cannot fully hide it and doesn't look as good as a dock. Honestly I wanted a dock that had the same look and feel as my current Rocketdock setup.

On the positive side Nexus is way smoother and feature rich.

Is there a way to display icons in a grid like RocketDock? Is it planned in the future?

I did look everywhere in the options, even inside the Sub-Dock options and I didn't find anything that could do that.

Best regards.

Mat.

Working on it.

This said, the Grid Stack I'm working on will not look like it does on your screenshot: it is a version of the existing Shelf, so it will look like a Shelf with a single tab.

This said, it has a ton of advantages over the standard RocketDock Stacks: it can display/hold/do EVERYTHING a Shelf does (i.e.; all the tab types) and is just as configurable, so you can use it to show the contents of a folder (Show Folder tab type) OR as a place you can drag shortcuts to (Regular tab type) and add modules, internal commands, etc...

Since it is basically a Shelf, it will also automatically use whatever skin is currently defined for Shelves, thus matching your current theme... OR you can specify a theme specific to that particular Grid Stack. :)

The world will be your oyster.

Good enough?

As long as it looks good enough I'm for it.

All I need is my icons displayed in a way that makes the dock usable. At some point I wished there was a way to have a shelf icon in the dock. And there you go :)

I'm very glad to see so much activity over here :) That is good news compared to the abandonware that RocketDock is.

I left Nexus open overnight to see if it slows down as RocketDock and it doesn't....feels like a healthy up to date software.

It will look like a Shelf with a single tab showing multiple rows of icons. The open animation will be different, of course, it will 'grow' to full size from the icon it spawns from.

The actual dimensions of the Grid Stack (<x> icons by <y> rows) will be calculated automatically, and, of course, it will not collapse to tabs - instead, the 'collapse' right mini-tab will act like a close button (although clicking outside the Grid Stack will have the same effect).

For now and while you wait, here's a hint: it would perhaps be better if you displayed your current sub-dock 'stack' in a menu, since sub-docks, as you've noticed, where never intended to have a ton of icons in them. Menus, on the other hand, are great for this and they also display the filenames.

Here is how to do it: I imagine you still have the folder you were using as a Stack source in RocketDock, right?

Drag it to the dock, then right click on it and select Dock Entry Properties. It should show as a 'Folder' item in the Properties dialog, so select the 'Show Folder as a menu' setting. Now when you click on that icon it will show the contents of the folder in a menu.

Thank you for the tip :)

I think I will just use RD for now and wait till Nexus has the stack shelves. :)

Yes I have all my RD icons in a special "database folder" that I maintain as needed. Those are the ones I'm gonna be using in the future with Nexus.

BTW: I have my dock usually in a monitor in portrait mode. Just in case you never had an user that does that. I would be more than happy to report any findings.

Tsk tsk. Give the menu idea a try. :)

With the Winstep Grid Stack you won't need to maintain shortcuts in a folder, you can manipulate them directly in the Stack if you set it to 'Regular', just like you do shortcuts in a dock.

Thanks... I don't expect any issues with that though.

So I replaced all the sub docks with folder menus.

It is actually a nice workaround for now. Bye Bye RocketDock, you served me well...but is time to go. :)

Don't hesitate to ask me if you need me to test things with the new stack when it comes.

Muito Obrigado :)

Open Preferences, go to the Advanced tab and enable 'Notify me of beta (test) versions'... the Update Manager will notify you when a beta is out (just in case you're not paying attention to the forum when that happens).

Are you planning a beta Jorge? Love to test out some of the new features.

I only release betas once I'm satisfied with the quality of the code, so it might take a while. :)

P.S. This does not mean there won't be any bugs, of course, but I do my best to catch them all before I release a beta! lol
