Is there a way to duplicate or clone a dock or shelf item? This can be useful if I have an item in dock/shelf and I want to add few similar (new) items with 1 difference in item property.

You're talking about items and not whole shelves and docks, right (both are possible, by the way).

Assuming it's items, just press CTRL while dragging (same thing you need to do in Windows when you want to copy items instead of moving them).

SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!!! You mean I've been manually creating duplicate shelf entries all these years?!

Apparently... lol :)

The ability to clone *sub-docks/grid stacks* and their whole contents (regardless of how many levels that content is nested to) by dragging and dropping the parent icon with CTRL pressed is relatively recent, though.

What is sorely STILL missing is the ability to select multiple items at once in a Shelf, Drawer or Grid Stack. Hmmm....
