Since I use a better file manager, I wouldn't mind an option to disable this feature to reduce any overhead it might create.

If that's too much trouble, then don't worry about it.

I'm glad you found a workaround.

Just don't put an icon pointing to explorer.exe on the dock. :)

Just wanted to let you know that there seems to be some issue with the "Hide desktop icons" code. It may have something to do with a recent Windows update.
Since several weeks or maybe months I've had heavy lags on the right-click - anywhere from 10 seconds up to 1 or 2 minutes. I've also had frequent explorer crashes and sometimes even a explorer crash-loop,that could only be fixed by rebooting or waiting for about 10-15 minutes.
It all stopped after disabling the "Hide destop icons" option in Workshelf.

Edit:
It took me quite a while to figure it out. I've suspected pretty much everything, mostly "DisplayFusion Pro", "Actual Window Manager", "Aero Glass", "Black Glass Enhanced", "Kaspersky IS" and "Sandboxie".
I've had uninstalled most of them - it didn't help but I wanted at least to reduce burden. Now that I've found out the reason, I have reinstalled all of them and everything still works perfectly fine.

Thanks for the heads up, although I doubt it has anything to do with the 'hide desktop icons' feature per se. Running Windows 10 1909 latest updates here and not seeing any issues so far, nobody else reporting similar issues either.

Anyway, you can also rely on Windows own 'Show desktop icons' setting in the Desktop's right click menu. Give that a try.

So, as anyone already tried the Shelf's 'attach/detach to screen edge' feature by dragging with the mouse pointer?

I've edited my previous post and added some info. I can imagine that it's a rather rare issue and it's probably just one of the those random Windows issues (of which there seems to be an unlimited amount) - for me however it was definitely the cause.
What I forgot to mention - it also fixed some missing tray icons that were gone since a few weeks. Don't know, maybe it was hung up somehow. Definitely strange.

I just detached and reattached it. :-)

I don't use a shelf much anymore but just enabled mine for testing. Detached and attached to all 4 sides just fine...and also "floated" just fine.

Cool stuff.

How did it 'feel' (eheh) ? Did the 'trembling resistance' when pulling feel natural? :P

The attachment animation had a weird jerkiness to it. Like it "stuck" for a moment and then attached.

The detachment was fine, I thought, once I figured out which part I needed to drag. I kept grabbing the title bar area, which wanted to resize it. I knew dragging an icon would not work, so I got the bright idea to drag the empty area and had my "aha!" moment.

If you press the ALT shift key when left clicking on a dock you can drag it even by the icons... the Shelf was supposed to do the same but in this beta it only does it when floating - already fixed it, of course.

Bottom line: when dragging to move a shelf or dock, press ALT at the same time.

As for the weird jerkiness which gives it the 'it's stuck for a moment' feeling, that is exactly the idea. If you have a docked Shelf that is not set to full screen width, you can change it's alignment in relation to the center of the screen (like you can a dock) by dragging it horizontally (assuming an horizontal dock or shelf). Without the 'it's stuck' haptic feedback it would be very easy to accidentally undock a shelf when all you wanted was to move it left or right but (while keeping it docked). The 'vibration' lets you know that you are just about to undock the thing.

Hope this makes sense. :)

This said, since what you want does make **some** sense despite my initial reaction, I already added the code necessary for the running indicator to appear on an explorer.exe icon ONLY if an explorer window is currently open. You will see this functionality in the next beta/official release, whichever comes first.

From now on, however, I'll tell anyone complaining about CPU usage of the Winstep application to go talk to you.

Hehe thanks Jorge :D

Maybe make it a toggleable option for those who don't use WE or for those who run Winstep on a laptop from 15 years ago - just thinking out loud :P

That 'attach/detach' shelf by dragging doesn't seem to work here, or am I missing something?
