(It took several tries here to log in.)

My Nexus dock shortcuts have been working okay, except for two issues.

1) In the Preference window, I click on Backup and nothing happens. Nothing happens even when I click on Restore.

Is there a manual way to back up (and restore) my user files?

2) I haven't been able to select icons, except for the system icons, which I have to type into the Browse space. I can do this only because I saved the location when I used Windows 7 - %SystemRoot%\System32\SHELL32.dll

But if I type in the paths to folders in which I have saved icons, nothing happens, that is, the folder contents don't show in the space they're supposed to. At first, this was happening only when I tried to change an icon; most recently, this happened with a new entry.

Would appreciate help.

Kami

P.S. In case anyone is interested in the system icon locations, there's also:
%SystemRoot%\system32\moricons.dll
%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll

I would really like to help you, but this is definitely not a problem of the Winstep application per se, but rather an indication that something in your system is corrupted.

Winstep applications use comdlg32.dll to show the file system dialogs - this is pretty straightforward as it isn't even a COM dialog (and in 20 years, AFAIK, you're the first one to complain about anything like this). It's a system DLL, so not even something that the Winstep application needs to install.

If it's not working then something is probably wrong with this DLL or your system. Perhaps some other application installed an older, incompatible version of this system DLL on your PC.

Check out this web site for some possible advice, but be careful with what you do so as not to make things worse (I didn't dig too deep into the solutions offered there).

OK.

I'd like to know the location and files which I need to back up, so I can do it manually.

I searched for comdlg32.dll and used Recuva (the highest recommended app on the website you referred me to). In case you're curious, its DeepScan showed 3 unrecoverable instances, each with overwritten by "Windows/WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-comdlg32.resources_**************\comdlg32.dll.mui"

Very strange is that Recuva shows the files were last modified in March 2019. I got this computer only 3 weeks ago.

The webpage also strongly recommends *against* downloading a replacement.

Let me know what you managed to find out and how it went.

That's all I found out.

Can you tell me which user files I need to copy as a backup?

Ah, sorry, forgot about that. Settings are stored in the Windows Registry - to do a complete backup you need to export

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\WinSTEP2000

and all its sub-keys to a file, using RegEdit, the Windows Registry Editor.

You should probably read 'Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files' too.

Thanks. Are the registry files the same files that you get when the Backup works?
I thought those might be in AppData?

I used SFC on my previous computer, will try it here. Yesterday I ran system scans (by the computer mfr) and a McAfee virus scan. No problems showed up.

Per instruction on microsoft.com - Ran DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth, then sfc / scannow.

No issues found with either.

Nothing came up when I searched for that string in Regedit, with and without "match whole string only."

Would copying the Appdata Roaming files give me a backup?

Not sure it's a good idea for you to fiddle around in the Windows Registry if you don't know what you are doing, Kami. I assumed you had at least some basic knowledge.

In the left pane you have to click the arrow next to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER

to open that branch, then

Software

under it

and finally find the

WinSTEP2000

branch. It works just like a folder structure in Explorer.

Again, if you are not sure what you are doing, please ask someone who knows to do it for you - you can really hose your system if you do the wrong thing there.

I tried it only because you said that's the way to do a back up from outside the app. And I thought the Find function should locate it.

I really don't want to, but if copying the Appdata Roaming files won't work for a backup, then I have no choice.

I just "found" the comdlg32.dll file in the System32 folder.

I first typed it in the Change Icon window, and some icons showed up. (see screenshot).

Then I saw it in Win Sys32. As mentioned, I ran scans which showed no corruption.

Could Nexus be looking for it in another folder?

P.S. After posting this, I re-installed. For now, it's okay.

No. And you mean SysWOW64, not Sys32, right?

The SysWOW64 folder - despite the name - is actually the folder holding the 32 bit DLLs (the Winstep application is a 32 bit application so it can only work with 32 bit DLLs) while the System32 folder actually holds the 64 bit version of the same DLLs.

Yeah, you can blame Microsoft for that one lol

If you right click on Comdlg32.dll inside the SysWOW64 version, then choose Properties in the context menu, then go to the Details tab in the dialog that pops up, what is the File Version number and the Size of this DLL?

The file in the screenshot was from Sys32.

From SysWOW64 (new screenshots attached):

size: 675 KB
Created/Modified: Dec. 27, 2019
Accessed Jan. 18, 2020

Also comdlg32.ocx - which appeared in a recent error msg
size 152 KB
created Jan. 14, 2020
modified Feb. 16, 2010
accessed Jan 19, 2020

The comdlg32.dll error popped up again when I tried to change an icon just now.

The *.ocx error popped up when I tried to open Preferences.

This message board doesn't seem to let me add the Property details screenshot of this file. I'll do another msg.

Here's screenshot of comctl32.ocx property details. The first Properties windows also shows Created Jan 16, 2020, accessed Jan 19, 2020.

Can't help but wonder if Nexus is a 64 bit app, then why is it using 32 bit apps?
