Is there a way to set each tab (and it's background) to a different theme in the shelf? It would be useful because a user could easily and quickly visually tell which tab is being worked on. Thanks.

No, there isn't.

The only way such a thing would work given how different each theme can be from the other, would be a shelf with simple solid colors or textured backgrounds.

I was just reflecting on what something like that would entail.

Sounds nice in theory. But in practice it would be a bloody nightmare and throw up huge potential for all sorts of problems I can see. Would really need a separate exe I think, with just simple choices of colours and/or patterns, not themeable in the normal way I'd guess.
