Hi

When I minimize Chrome and Edge, thumbnail preview no longer appears. I have already confirmed that the option to display thumbnails for icons larger than 32x32 pixels is enabled.

how can i fix this?

I use Firefox so In wouldn't even have noticed.

The iconic thumbnails are NOT live preview thumbnails (like those you get when you mouseover the icon of a running application in the dock). They are a "hack" that asks the window of the target application to paint itself into a bitmap rather than the screen, and then makes an icon out of that image.

Depending on how the application renders to the screen and also on Windows permissions, this doesn't always work.

Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome are both based on Chromium. I think they changed something in Chromium (or even in Windows itself) that now prevents the Winstep application from retrieving an iconic thumbnail for those two browsers.

Guess Microsoft would call it "evolution".

Live Preview Thumbnails will still work as they should though.

Chromium - like anything Google - is a law unto itself. Anything Big G should really be avoided like the plague.

Anyway, 'played around' in Windows with Xtreme earlier today, and noticed the Live Previews from the NS taskbar are no longer working.

25.7 in Win 10

Working fine here on Windows 11 24H2 and also on a Windows 10 VM. You might have turned those off?

NextSTART Preferences -> Taskbar tab -> Tasklist Settings -> Advanced -> make sure "Show window previews (thumbnails) on mouseover" is checked.

That was the first thing I checked. :D And it was still checked. Damn mystifying. :/

On a different note - forgot to mention I also spotted a little problem in respect of analogue shelf/dock clocks. As these now use bitmaps for the hands, this presents a problem that's probably unique to me. I quite like clocks and watches that 'slow down' the time a bit by not showing me every flipping minute and second ticking by - or, put another way, clocks and watches that only have an hour hand. And thus, I have a couple of desktop clocks precisely like that, with a slightly elongated hour hand and 'invisible', i.e., transparent minute and second hands. This of course means dock/shelf clocks get a single hand that goes right on or over the rim of the clock. So, the solution of course is, do new hands, but that would mean losing my 'slow' clock. So I'll live with that. It's not like I'm in Windows that much. :)

How long is that hour hand for it to go right over the rim of the iconic analog clock?!

I just tested here on a Windows 10 VM and Edge iconic previews are working as intended. In fact, in your screenshot if there was no preview you would not even see a gray screen but only the Firefox icon.

What you need to understand is that *iconic* thumbnails are NOT "live previews". They are static "screenshots" taken from the application at specific times, when the Winstep detects that content MIGHT have changed (for instance, when the window's caption changes, and none of this is foolproof). If the application is minimized, no screenshot can be taken because the target application itself is in no condition to provide a screenshot of itself, so the iconic thumbnail will display the last screenshot it had before the target application was minimized.

Yes, I understand. Until a week or two ago,
Chrome was working with Like a real-time preview of the screenshot, which was always visible when a window was minimized.

Now, it's not showing anymore.
The same issue has also started with Firefox.
Please let me know if you find out anything.

About the length of a minute or second hand. But I noticed on checking a 'normal' analogue desktop clock that that too resulted in odd sized hands in the iconic clock. Now I admit this may well be unique to my own clocks, but I suspect it may well apply in other themes - I'll have a look when I get a chance. At the moment I'm very busy still with my Linux systems.
