Hi .. I'm running Vista 32 and just installed the latest version. I cannot get the system tray to show up in the menu. Ive tweaked lots of things and tried all the skins and still no go. I also tried the tips on setting the windows taskbar. Please help as I love the program but cant puter without the sys tray.

Since one picture is worth a thousand words, can you please post a screenshot of your desktop, with NextSTART Preferences open on the Tasklist and Systray Preferences tab, here or send it into the Winstep support address?

Thanks,

OMG! Good thing I asked you for a screenshot, look at the size of that systray clock button on the vertical startbar!

Ok, this has something to do with one of two things: either the Startbar being vertical or the size of the real Windows taskbar.

Just one more favor, please: open the main NextSTART menu, then the Settings sub-menu and click on 'Toggle NS Task Management'. This should disable the NextSTART startbar and bring back the real Windows taskbar - then please take another screenshot and post it here (this time with NextSTART Prefs open in the Startbar Preferences tab).

I wasnt able to find this " open the main NextSTART menu, then the Settings sub-menu and click on 'Toggle NS Task Management'."

I just took snap shot of hopefully the right pref screen, shut down NextSTART, and snapped desktop. Windows taskbar I usually have set to 'Auto-hide the taskbar' but disabled it so I could get the snap.

Ok, this is obviously a bug in NextSTART, but it is also a direct result of the highly unusual layout of your Windows taskbar.

Because there are no Window API functions to handle/manipulate the systray, the NextSTART systray is actually a 'hack' of the real thing. In other words, the size and shape of the NextSTART systray depend on the layout of the real Windows taskbar. To change the size of the systray in NextSTART, you have to change the size and/or position of the Windows taskbar (which directly affects the size/configuration of the systray)

This can sometimes be a problem with unusual configurations like yours *if* the NextSTART startbar is, for instance, set to horizontal mode and the Windows taskbar to vertical. Not the case in your system as both are vertical, so I can only assume that NextSTART is getting confused with the unusal size and disposition of the systray.

I'll have to make some tests here and then get back at you. In the mean time, you could try 'detaching' the systray from the taskbar to see if that helps (Tasklist and Systray Preferences tab in NextSTART Preferences).

I changed my windows taskbar horizontal & docked to the bottom of the screen and then made the NextSTART menu vertical at the left where I wanted it, and so far so good .. system tray is now appearing .. :D
