Since updating skype to v4, I found that whenever I opened it from the system tray, it would not respond to the mouse at all. I'd have to kill it and restart.
Researching the problem on the web, i found many OpenDock users having the same problem - and they could cure it by not using OD withthe system tray.
It looks like NextStart suffers from the same problem - If I close NextStart and use the normal Windows sys tray, Skype works perfectly. Start NextStart and if you open Skype from its systray, it's dead.

I've been using NextStart for years, but this is a real problem!

Any thoughts??

Steve

Thanks for the warning, Steve, I'll install Skype 4 and I'll let you know what I find out.

What can I do to improve Skype sound quality? I am using 3 Mobile broadband? Most people on the other end cannot hear me at all, even when using a Logitech Skype headset. I am using Vista Home Premium and the upload speed of my modem is 80kb/s.

I never got a fix so I've stopped using NextStart
I still use WorkShelf and I'd love to have NextStart back, but Skype is more important for me...

This problem is forced by Skype, not by Winstep. That's not to bad, in fact Skype 4.x versions are not very stable (huge list of issures with Vista), and furtermore bothers with tons of commercial sh.. . So to speak malware.

Easy solution:

Just downgrade to Skype 3.8. If using Skype 4.1x or later, first install version 4.0, then go down to 3.8 (4.1x versions don't allow direct downgrade).

Works perfectly, besides the Skype 3.8 version ist much better anyway...

...uhm... surely better then my poor english...

Ok, just managed to fix this issue here, at least in Vista - but let me say that this is mostly Skype's 4.x fault with the non-standard way it handles the systray right-click notification messages. In fact, other programs that replace the systray (including ObjectDock) are having the same problem with Skype 4.x.

Anyway, for those technically minded: when you right click a systray icon, the program attached to it usually opens a context menu. For this menu to be dismissed properly (i.e. by clicking anywhere else that isn't the menu) the application responsible for the context menu must have the focus (otherwise you click, say, on an empty area of the desktop and the context menu stays up).

Giving the focus to the proper application is usually achieved via a SetForegroundWindow API call when the right mouse button is pressed down. For some reason known to its developers only, it was this call that was causing the problem with Skype 4.x. Removing it made Skype 4.x behave properly when clicking its systray icon, but, obviously, also prevented the Skype systray context menu (and the context menu of all other systray icons) from being dismissed by clicking elsewhere.

From Window 2000 onwards (ME, actually), a new API function called AllowSetForegroundWindow was introduced. What I found out is that this call has essentially the same effect of 'SetForegroundWindow' in terms of allowing the systray context menus to be dismissed, BUT it prevents Skype 4.x from misbehaving. So AllowSetForegroundWindow is what I am using from now on (and SetForegroundWindow as a fall back in case AllowSetForegroundWindow fails - which WILL happen on Win9x systems).

Hmm, I reckon this may also be the reason why my Bluetooth icon
doesn't work properly with NS. It only gets occasional use so I can
live with that.

However, the PortableApps Menu problem has me a bit confused as its
systray menu works fine but PAM stops functioning after it's brought back
from the systray icon (mouse clicks stop working).
I believe all of Xtreme has to be closed before it functions again.
It was also a problem for ObjectDock users in the past. Not sure if it's
still a problem for OD users.

Anyway, not terribly important but an annoyance nonetheless.

How are Skype version 4 recorded conversations deleted? Conversations on skype are recorded on the users own computer -- not externally by Skype -- so eventually consume storage space. Having recently upgraded to Version 4, I have difficulty locating the deletion process -- which was never readily found.

Not sure this is a Winstep question  However...

On my Skype 4, you just highlight a conversation in the list then press the X (delete) button that appears at the right hand end.
