I've noticed that the shelf opens sometimes when the mouse is hovered around on the nextstart taskbar. Slight annoyance.

That's the edge bump. You can disable it by right clicking on the Shelf mini-tab -> Shelf Properties -> Behavior -> 'Activate shelf by bumping the screen edge...'
