I have a gmail.com email address and I am having difficulty in setting up the checker. Has anyone had any success with this type of account?

Yep, Kutagh is right. It used to work (in fact, the SSL encryption support was added because of it) but sometime in early 2010 Gmail started refusing the connection right at the client-hello phase of the hand-shaking protocol.

The email checker does seem to work with gmail now. The link below will take you through the configuration of the windows mail client that the Nexus email checker uses http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=86383

Update 15/08/2010: The above guidance only referred to setting up your Windows mail client and doesn't mean you will get advance notification of new email arrivals. It seems this feature doesn't work as yet. Apologies for any confusion this may have caused.

Are you sure?! Even I can't get it to work with my Gmail account here.

oh pants! I think my enthusiasm just got the better of me here. I didn't understand the objective of the "notifies" was to give advance note of newly received emails. I just set this up to activate the email client on a mouse click and couldn't see why anybody would have difficulty doing the same. oh well, shame really. I have seen this feature in other dock systems and it looks quite nice, but I suspect they also are experiencing issues too.

To be honest I don't really know why im even looking at this though. I always have my email account open. On top of this my phone never shuts up ringing and vibrating with email and sms notifications from work and private life so I truly don't need yet another flag waved at me lol. I'm starting to develop a nervous twitch in my right butt cheek.

Yeah, email notifiers were once very useful, but these days most people just leave their email client open 24/24, constantly downloading new mail. There is also so much spam arriving all the time that email notifiers are pretty much spewing new mail notifications left and right.

That is what I love about Gmail: 95% of the spam gets in the correct folder: Spam. I am already using the gmail notifier in Firefox which alerts me when I'm browsing the web anyway.
On a side note, the university I'm going to this year recently switched to Gmail as well So that mail account gets checked automatically as well. Saves me a lot of time.
