Kind of outside your scope I know, but I thought since Setpoint is so problematic you might have some ideas. I'd dump it in a second to favor the WinStep if I could still have full (or even close to full) mouse functionality. If I remember right the default WinXP drivers strip it down completely.

Or maybe you have a favorite Setpoint version to load and stick with?

WinXPHome here, observations on the Win7/Vista versions might be useful for others. Maybe we can reduce your headache? :)

Unfortunately with Logitech it's always a choice between basic mouse functionality (which I think is good enough for most people) or Setpoint. No middle ground.

Or you go for hardware from another company.

I love my Razer Naga, for instance - it glows blue in the dark, and their software doesn't interfere with 3rd party software.

I got a Razer Lachesis myself. I love it, it works driverless too (and remembers properly what you binded the additional buttons to, regardless of drivers being installed or not).

Well darn. I was hoping someone might have done some alternative drivers, like the Omega video drivers.

I actually do get a lot of use from being able to assign various alpha keystrokes to the buttons, strippo mouse drivers are a real hindrance.

The Razers do look pretty cool but I'm not in the market for a new mouse right now. These things don't last forever though.

I've got a MicroSoft mouse stashed away that I got awhile back, trying to dodge the Logitech software before I'd even heard of WinStep. Thing's so friggin' huge it's like scooting a softball around, put up with it for 2 weeks before I decided my hand was never going to uncramp with it. I think it was a little weak on the button assignments too.

Well thanks, it was worth a shot anyway. :)

I use X-Mouse Button Control located here:

http://www.highrez.co.uk

It supports only the standard windows mouse button messages. So, it will handle left. right, middle, forward, backward, and if using Vista or later, it will also handle tilt-wheel buttons. It has per-application settings, as well as layers, which can redefine all the buttons when it sees an associated hot-key pressed. It supports both 32-bit and 64-bit OS.

I have since uninstalled Logitech Setpoint and drivers altogether.
