Maybe Im missing something,

Looking for the option that is available in Nexus,that being;

"apply transparency to dock background only (icons remain opaque)" under Appearance in Dock Properties.

Never been a fan of icons and bought the software as this was the only co. I could locate that addressed this, thanks.

I'm not sure I understand... you want *menu* backgrounds to be transparent?

Winstep has an option under 'Appearance', tick the box to have icons opaque and the "docked" background transparent.

I had these settings available using Nextstart, since the update, my settings are no longer recognised and cannot see my menu items.

That setting is only available for docks, not menus. For NextSTART menus, you can only control the overal opacity of the whole menu - and it was like that in previous versions.

Assuming you are running v10.9, open NextSTART Preferences and go to the Menus tab. At the bottom left corner there is a section dedicated to menu transparency.

Also, a screenshot of the problem might help.

An example is attached of Nextstart now, as mentioned, previously, I had a transparent menu that had the items listed, ie. as shown, however, kept as opaque, as its called.

Essentially, the exact same option you have with the "dock" options in Nexus.

The effect I had was text only on the screen.

mmmm... the screenshot is not working now, cannot attach file.
