Would it be possible (or is it?) to have an option where the email checker pops to the foreground when new mail arrives? Maybe for a specified amount of time, then it falls back to it's assigned z-order position...

The trouble would be as the email checker comes forward what ever you are doing goes some place else (not on top). I don't think you want it interupting what you are doing. Playing a sound might be better as a way to get your attention. That is what you want isn't it? A way to get your attention whan an eamil is detected.

I was thinking of the little notification thing that outlook has... a little windows sort of slides up letting you know you have mail, but does not steal window focus.

Ok, I think this should be a good compromise: starting with the next release, if you enable the email checker systray icon, a balloon tooltip will popup notifying you whenever you have new mail. As with all systray balloon tooltips, it comes to the foreground but does not steal the focus from the currently active window. After a short while, the balloon tooltip fades away all by itself.

I'm not sure if it helps, but the email client I use (WikMail) has a popup feature that appears on top of whatever I'm doing but is slightly transparent. It does not take focus off the window I was in either. So if I was typing this message for example, I could continue doing so with the notification animation sitting on top.

I'm not sure if that's what was being requested here. I understand that sort of 'intrusion' doesn't appeal to everyone. It suits me
