I installed Nexus on a new Windows 7 Pro x64 machine. The only option that I set was "Show running applications in this dock" in the Tasks tab. When I clicked on Apply, it nicely showed all the running applications which included 4 Windows Explorer windows. I closed two of the windows but the task list still shows 4 along with 4 thumbnails where two are empty. If I start other applications, they don't show. The task list updates appropriately only after I open the preferences and click on Apply. So, every time I start or end an application, if I want the tasks area to update, I have to apply the preferences. Did I forget to set/unset anything? I was hoping to buy the Xtreme package during the sale but I'm looking to replace the Windows task bar. Everything else about the dock is excellent!

Hmmm, I'm not aware of anything wrong with the Nexus tasklist, although your screenshots obviously show some kind of problem.

Could you please try rebooting your computer and see if the issue persists?

Also, it probably has nothing to do with it, but how did you close the two Explorer windows, by clicking on them or via the Nexus thumbnails?

Yes, it persists even after a reboot.

I closed the windows by clicking on them. If I close the window via Nexus, the task area updates fine. Only when windows open or close outside of Nexus the changes are not picked up unless I click on Apply in the Preferences window.

Thanks for looking into this.

I can't be sure, but that might happen if the Shell hook that notifies Nexus of changes in top level windows is not working for some reason (i.e.; Nexus is not being notified that a window has been closed, or changed caption, etc....).

Are you running any type of 'unusual' software on your system?

I wouldn't say that I have anything unusual on it...yet. It's a new Java developer's laptop that I got from my company and I was just starting to "customize" it with helpful utilities, like Nexus. That was the first one that I installed. It's a Lenovo W520 with their Thinkvantage tools, MS Office 2010, SQL Server 2008, Eclipse, IssueView, NG3 Source, SubVersion, and all the latest Windows and Lenovo updates.. Nothing that I think would interfere with Windows' hooks.

BTW, thanks for the very quick responses.

Ok, try one more thing: does the tasklist start updating properly if you set the dock to display the system tray icons (you can group them so they won't use too much space on the dock)?

No, showing the system tray icons doesn't affect the tasklist behavior. I asked a coworker with a similar machine to try it out and they are having the same issues.

Eh?

I have Windows 7 x64 here, tested this again and not a problem.

Nobody else here is complaining either (this is one of the things I imagine would generate an instant outcry if broken).

So, whatever is causing this, it must be something that is the same for both you and your co-worker. I would actually like to figure out what it is.

I had a feeling that it might be something specific to my machine especially since I didn't fine other posts about it. Let me know what I can do to help. I'm going to ask a friend in IT if there might be any company settings that might be affecting it, although I'm a local admin and should have full access.

Thanks.

That shouldn't be it either, but can you check if WsxService.exe is running? That's the Winstep Windows service used to perform operations or get information that would require elevation otherwise.

Just checked myself: WinStep is updating normally.
