While installing the new version, I received a software protection error and several .zip file errors. The program runs ok, but Kaspersky discovered that NextStart is trying to modify my hosts file, which I did not allow because that is very disturbing to me.

It's not trying to modify it, it's *reading* it to make sure the winstep.net domain hasn't been added to it to bypass the copy protection mechanism.

I'm getting sick of Kaperski, to tell you the truth. It would be right to flag this if Winstep attempted to actually *write* to the file. Just because it opens it with read/write access is not enough reason to flag the operation and cast suspicion on an application.

Another problem with Kaperski is that it can flag Winstep software as a keylogger. Reason? Winstep monitors global keys so it can respond to a keyboard shortcut even if Winstep doesn't currently have the focus. There are dozens of other legit reasons to monitor keystrokes, but no, Kaperski will flag every single application that does that as a key logger.

Sigh. :?

I have been sick of Kapersky for a good while now, it causes numerous problems  . in fact it is being totally uninstalled/re-installed with a new version, later today. I am giving it one last chance before I dump it.

Best Regards

Thanks for info, Kaspersky needs to be more clear when it complains. :)
I don't mind Kaspersky's intrusiveness, only because it does help catch bad software before something goes wrong, but I hate Kaspersky's firewall because it allows most programs to phone home, so I use Zonealarm for the firewall.

I really think the new Winstep Xtreme version 10.9 is great BTW! :D

WebRoot is now complaining about the exact same thing (reviving this thread 6 years later!). It's a bit disturbing that sophisticated A/V can't distinguish READ from WRITE.
