Err, what are you doing running the free version of Nexus if you have Winstep Xtreme?

Anyway, 'it happens every time' when? Immediately after a reboot?

It obviously wasn't happening before, so what changed on your system?

Last time I saw Winstep applications crashing left and right like this was due to a faulty Windows update... and Windows issued a bunch of updates yesterday.

However, I've already downloaded and installed them here on my Windows 7 x64 system and I am not seeing any issues.

I don't see how I could have the free version of Nexus since everything came in one install file. So I reinstalled Xtreme using the following steps:

1. Downloaded fresh installation
2. Exited Xtreme
3. Used Task Manager to unload Nexus since an instance was still running even after exiting Xtreme (but no bar at the bottom of the window)
4. Uninstalled Nexus 16.3 using CCleaner (I didn't uninstall my settings)
5. Reinstalled Xtreme
6. Launched Xtreme

(Note: Steps 3 through 6 were done with extreme gnashing of teeth since I was stuck with using a Windows start menu that did NOT want to cooperate. If I ever have to go without Winstep for an extended amount of time, I'm switching to Linux!)

The version number information is the same as before:

workshelf.exe 16.03.1118
WSUpdate.exe 16.02.0157
Winstep.exe 15.09.0076
wsZip.dll 1.01.0000
wsUnzip.dll 1.01.0000

As to Xtreme not previously crashing on startup, this is the first time I've rebooted since installing the latest version of Xtreme so I don't know if the crashing problem existed before this. Yes, my computer has been running continuously for the past couple months at least.

It is happening every startup, but fortunately I can rerun Xtreme after startup and it appears to work fine. And the reason for rebooting was twofold: 1. I ran out of memory because some app has been slowly leaking memory for the last couple months, and 2. I had a bunch of Windows updates that needed to be installed. Another update was posted so I installed it and now I'm going to try a reboot. I'll let you know what happens.

I just rebooted. This time, only NextStart crashed. It started, then opened, then it's entire footprint turned white when it crashed. The two modules I have on it, weather and clock, stayed there for a few seconds more, then they disappeared and I can't find them anywhere on my desktop. The white area hides all programs that are behind it, and the mouse cursor goes into an hourglass when hovered above it. Attempting to restart it fails (probably because it's still there).

Looking in the Task Manager, Nextstart is taking up a constant 13% of CPU time in 4 threads. There are no disk or network accesses. No services are being used by it.

Clicking in the white area brings up the standard "CPU is not responding" box. It also causes the weather and clock modules to appear. Using the box to close the program removes the white area and leaves the modules where they were. I started NextStart from WorkShelf->Main and it comes back up normally.

The good news is that Nexus doesn't crash anymore so maybe I've got the right version now.

I checked the link to the faulty update information you provided so I found the update and uninstalled it. There are no more Xtreme starting problems now, and Windows now starts in 2 minutes instead of the previous 10 minutes.

BTW, I really like how you cleaned off all the icons from my desktop and placed them into WorkShelf->Desktop. No more shuffling windows around to get to them.

"<snip> it's entire footprint turned white when it crashed. <snip> The white area hides all programs that are behind it, and the mouse cursor goes into an hourglass when hovered above it. Attempting to restart it fails (probably because it's still there)."

I had a similar but different experience this morning. It wasn't on restart but had been running a while when both Nexus (docked at top of screen) and Workshelf (docked at bottom) rendered large white areas with hourglass cursors and were unresponsive. Restarting Extreme did nothing. I terminated all Winstep processes in Task Manager but there was no screen redraw. I had to restart computer and have had no issues since.

A few details:

* Win 10 ... got updates yesterday as well

* Running WinStep Extreme 16.5 beta

* Nothing in particular *appeared* to trigger this event; at least nothing caught my attention.

Will be glad to provide any additional details you request, but won't take any steps until I hear from you. Will update status if I have a recurrence. Thus far it appears to have been a one-time event.
