Post subject:  Sygate personal firewall and Symantec

Say Jorge,

I just now found out that Symantec acquired Sygate's stuff
(been offline and computerless since last September) and as
expected they killed off the Personal Firewall line.
If you're using the Personal line are you gonna stick with it or
move to something else?
ZoneAlarm works fine on XP but bluescreens my Win98 setup
so I was aiming toward Sygate's firewall. Oh well.

Flashback: I remember in my good ole DOS/Win3 days Symantec
went acquisition crazy and bought out all the goodies I used
to use (Procomm Plus, Central Point Backup, Norton Backup/Utilities,
Fifth Generation Backup, Quarterdeck[?], and others).
Then in one fell swoop they discontinued everything save for their
Windows counterparts.
Actually ranted about that in a symantec newsgroup back then, got
no sympathy. "Windows 95 is the future, embrace it" was the general
response.
Linux since '92 so I bypassed Win95 altogether. Didn't install '98
'til 2000, XP in 2005 (and lovin' it, much to the chagrin of my
Slackware). (^_^)
But I digress...

Any ideas for a firewall alternative to ZoneAlarm for use with Win98?

I don't know about alternatives, I'm still using the last release of the Sygate Personal Firewall Pro. And I am PISSED at Symantec for doing exactly what you described!

When a product gets so good that it blows away anything Symantec has to offer, they solve the problem not by improving their own product but by buying out the competition and terminating their product. It happened with AtGuard (I loved that firewall too) and now with Sygate.

Not only are Symantec's alternatives inferior to the products they destroyed, as anything they offer is incredibly bloated for what it does! I mean, I do use NAV, but it pisses me off when I see it running process after process after process (and consuming MB of RAM after MB of RAM) just to do a simple task which is to protect your computer from viruses.

Worse, some of the Symantec services leak handles by the thousands, not to mention RAM. I have to terminate the SymWSC service from time to time because of that.

For all these reasons, plus the ones you mentioned, I'm kind of glad to see them heading for trouble now that Microsoft is preparing to take over the Anti-Virus/Firewall/Anti-Spyware market.

As long as they don't step on my AVG/Adaware/SpybotS&D faves
that'll be a good thing.
[Who'da thought I'd root for Microsoft] :-)

Kerio looks good. No Win98 version but I might give it a go on XP
just to compare to ZoneAlarm.

Thanks,
Marc

P.S. Oh, I did find the old 2.1.5 version for Win98.

The latest version of ZoneAlarm looks good.

And speaking of Microsoft, who would have guessed they would turn to us, shareware authors, and copy our methods? As of today, anybody running a counterfeit copy of Windows is going to be nagged to death into caughing up the $$$ and going legit:

My guess is that they're betting on the majority of 'ilegit' Windows users having automatic updates turned on (because Windows Update requires you to validate your copy of Windows) and sneak up on them with their Windows Genuine Advantage Notification tool, which, once installed, cannot be removed.

If a shareware author ever tried this kind of stunt, he would be instantly crucified, burn at the stake and have his remainders publicly displayed all over the place.

Microsoft's problem is that it learned a little bit from us and now thinks it knows it all. One thing we learned a long time ago is that you DO NOT want to piss your legit users. Any anti-piracy technique that does this is going to turn right back at you and byte you in the royal behind.

I shudder to think at the amount of false positives and annoyed legit customers this move is going to generate. Ah well...

With regards to the whole commercial bloatware discussion, I just recently switched from McAfee's VirusScan Online to AVG's free virus scanner, and I'm very happy with the results. AVG does the same things McAfee did, with much less CPU and memory useage, especially when sending and receiving email messages. As for firewall software, I prefer a hardware firewall, as it doesn't tie up ANY system resources.

But the hardware firewall doesn't tell you when something is trying to get OUT. That's why I also run Sygate, even though I'm protected by the hardware firewall in my Linksys router from stuff trying to get IN.

One: We don't quite help on illegal stuff... ;)
Two: Limewire is quite a dangerous client from what I heard, I'd advise you to use alternative methods.
Three: Which firewall are you using? Windows firewall requires a different method for unblocking applications then for example ZoneAlarm firewall...

How do I get around a firewall keeping my computer from connecting to limewire? I'm a college student, and I'm staying in a house with two of my friends. We have wireless internet, but my friends dad put up a firewall so that we couldn't use limewire. Any ideas? And please don't use the technical terms, I'm not stupid, I just don't know the terms...
