Problem solved. The problem was caused by a bug in the latest two flights of Windows in the Dev Channel. The following is an excerpt from the release notes for Windows 20206.1000…

· We fixed an issue from the last two flights resulting in Office documents opening blank when opened from File Explorer rather than from within the app.


Word now opens the document normally without having to use the File-Open menu to view it.
