Yes, alas, printer and scanner drivers can still be a headache. It's time the Linux community accepted that proprietary hardware drivers are a necessary evil - even if it means having to pay for them. :(
No support for either of my scanners, although at least my (high-end) film scanner has driver and app in development, and beta soon-ish.
