My brother has a laptop running xp and the drive is only 3 gig. He wants to buy a larger drive so we need to take an image of the current drive. We have a usb adapter so we can hook it up to my desktop. The question I have is what image program will create the image in windows rather than dos?? :?:

In the old times what I used to do was open a command prompt window and do a xcopy <source drive>: <destination drive>: /s /e /c /h followed by a sys <source drive>: <destination drive>: , problem is that while xcopy with the above switches should transfer all the files, the sys command doesn't even exist in XP, so the drive would not be bootable.

Does xcopy copy long filename information? I was under the impression that using a program like xcopy would result in truncation of all long filenames.

Xcopy32 does. Unfortunately Xcopy32 does not exist under XP, so my guess is that Xcopy under XP does the same job as Xcopy32 under Win9x.

Ah, but you can go download XXCopy which is XCopy on steroids.

http://www.xxcopy.com

It's what I use for my LAN backup script and works just fine on 2k/XP. And, yes, it does long filenames without a hitch.

You might want to try the Knoppix Live Linux CD. I think there is a good set of imaging utilities.

Ok, is there a dumbass of the week award? I think I deserve it!

Still, Knoppix would fit the bill!
