One of the deep foundation principles of IT is that you never do anything without being able to undo it, whenever it's conceivably possible.

I have NUlt installed and registered and now I have Xtreme that I want to install, but everything has its nuances of performance and conflict and idiosyncrasies of behaviour - so I want to be sure that if I have to take time acquainting myself with certain features or factors of Xtreme then I can revert [sic] to Ultimate until I fine-tune Xtreme.

Is it possible to have them both installed?
I saw where you said in a thread here, Jorge, that one overwrites the other in 'Uninstall'. That gave me the shudders.
I certainly understand that I wouldn't want both running simultaneously, but the verb here is 'installed'.

**I searched for 'nexus xtreme both' but the search wasn't permitted. Too simple..
(Is it going to be Winstep Ultimate soon, to eliminate the complexity..?)

In Winstep Xtreme everything is modular, therefore, if you exit NextSTART and prevent it from running at startup and close all the desktop modules/widgets, what you essentially have is Nexus Ultimate.

So, there is no reason to have Nexus Ultimate and Winstep Xtreme installed at the same time (although you can since settings for both are stored separately) - you will only end up confusing yourself.

It's a bit like the reason Apple gives for iPhone apps not having Quit functions. 'You don't need to.' Not the desired response.

I still hold that doing things without an 'undo' is ill-advised.

I'm prepared to look after what could potentially confuse me, Jorge, but I still want to have Ultimate and Xtreme installed simultaneously.

From what I interpret in your parenthetical statement, it should be possible. I'll give it a shot soon now.

If there's anything that could complement dual installation, I'd be interested to hear. TYK.

It's not like that at all. If you want a proper comparison, it's more like running two instances of Nexus Ultimate at the same time... It's just a waste of resources, and good luck finding out which dock belongs to which instance.

So, do it if you want to do it so much, just don't say I didn't warn you about the consequences. :D

Jorge, I think you're scanning the thread. You missed my earlier meaning: not running; installed.

I'm just looking for pointers that would allow me to have both programs installed, so that if I don't understand something in Xtreme I can, for the time being, revert to Ultimate. 'Undo'.

If Winstep publishes 'just apps' then they should be easily stoppable, rather than programs that insert files into the system, or into drivers, or use the same resident folder ...etc.

Anything hints welcome.

Ooops, sorry, you're right, I was scanning the thread.

Winstep Xtreme and Nexus Ultimate use the same installer ID *by design*. So, if you install Winstep Xtreme and then go to Program and Features, you will see 'Winstep Xtreme' in the list of installed programs. Now install Nexus Ultimate without uninstalling Xtreme first and the 'Winstep Xtreme' entry in Programs and Features will be replaced by 'Nexus Ultimate'.

Use that entry to uninstall and both Winstep Xtreme and Nexus Ultimate are uninstalled.

Nexus, Nexus Ultimate and Winstep Xtreme use the same ID because they are essentially different 'levels' of the same application, and, as such, share most of the data. Because of this you cannot uninstall one without uninstalling the other (or bits of the other) too, thus rendering whatever is left inoperable. Sharing the same ID makes sure everything is removed when you uninstall, among other technical benefits.

Another benefit of having the same ID is that you don't need to uninstall Nexus before installing Nexus Ultimate. When installed on top, Nexus Ultimate will automatically remove the executable of the free version of Nexus.

Installing Winstep Xtreme on top of Nexus Ultimate without first uninstalling the latter already requires you to manually delete nexus-ultimate.exe from the Winstep folder in Program Files.

Okay, cool; almost there.

So we've got the implications of uninstalling, and what happens to Nexus when Ultimate is installed, and that Ultimate & Xtreme use the same identifier.
And that nexus-ultimate.exe resides in the same folder as X.
And NU's shortcuts will be replaced by X's. (Easily fixed..)
Uninstalling takes them both out.

Everything now depends on the word 'requires'.
I'm wondering why nexus-ultimate.exe needs to be deleted. Must it be, or could both N and X co-exist and be run (at different times) from the same location? That's the last missing part.
(I'm no programmer, so there may be implications of there being only one identifier that I'm not aware of.)
[Italics doesn't work.]

Nexus + Nexus Ultimate store settings at a different place in the Registry from Winstep Xtreme. This means you can run Nexus Ultimate and Winstep Xtreme separately without changes made to one interfering with the other.
