Hi Guys been stalking the forum for well over a year now since my free subscription ended waiting to see if Jorge would come back and looks like he's around. So now I'm ready to go all in. Just wanted to know if I buy the license is there a constant renewal fee or am I free to use on my pc until it burn outs

Thanks again to Chucky & Skagon for their help in answering my questions the last few months.

when you purchase a license it's a one year license that will allow you to download and install any updates to your winstep program for that year. when your license expires you will not be able to receive any further updates until you by a new license, but you winstep program will keep being fully functional forever even after your license expires.

In other words, house, it's a bit like buying any other "boxed" programme, only with a 1-year grace period.
When you buy any programme, you have what's included in the box. Sure, you may be entitled to minor updates or patches, but essentially that's what you get.
With Winstep, you're entitled to *any* versions, minor or major, builds and patches come out within that one year that your licence is valid. After it's gone, you can still keep on using any of those -- I would assume you'd stick to the last update released within that timeframe for obvious reasons -- for ever.
But if you want new builds, you'll have to renew.

we will see if he's back. he's really only been dealing with licenses. i'll personally consider him back when we get a new beta with xp support pulled, and the code base updated, and vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 8.1.1 are the main os's supported.

Why the hell would I pull XP support when Winstep software is still compatible with Windows 2000 and there are thousands of users still running XP? Just because I can? Because that is the current trend? I don't think so.

Also, beneath all that WinRT 8.x crude and the features Microsoft decided to remove, Win 8.x is basically the same as Windows 7 - and Winstep software is developed on a Win7 system, so that is the main Windows version supported.

Send off Windows XP by blowing it up with Microsoft's help

From the good-sport department, Microsoft takes a shot at itself with a Web game that encourages players to send Windows XP back to the early naughts, permanently.

As Windows XP begins its long demise, you can't accuse Microsoft of lacking in gallows humor. As support for the endurance champion of modern OSes ended this week, the Internet Explorer team released a hilarious self-deprecating Web game called "Escape from XP" to have a little fun while also encouraging folks to upgrade to newer versions of Windows and Internet Explorer.
The game play itself isn't quite up to par with what's come out of the Xbox team, like, ever, but who cares? This is a glorious 8-bit self-satire that features an evil Clippy lording over a battlefield of ancient PCs, Internet Explorer 6 logos, and other digital relics from an age before the MS Office ribbon when Justin Timberlake was still just a member of 'N Sync and Friendster was king.

In the past, renewing the license actually had value.
Not so much anymore since Winstep has been a functional dead horse for well over a year now. My license, even though it is well expired still allows me to run the app on Win 8.1u1.

lets tell the truth over two years is more accurate. my last license ended on may 6th, 2012, and at that time i was was waiting for new release before renewing.

And here I thought my version was an "old one" (license expired in June of 2012) as stated in another thread I started. Little did I realize that it is still the current version!

The license itself doesn't expire, i.e.; it keeps on working with whatever version you have... your update subscription is what expires, i.e.; your current license just won't work with updates released *after* that date.

If there are no updates for a while, you have no reason to renew your license.
