Every time I reboot I have to reinstall Nexus Ultimate version 14.11. Each time I exit out of my PC it reverts to version 12.9. Why won't version 14.11 hold?

Unfortunately you are looking for answers at the wrong place, this is not an issue with Nexus Ultimate per se, but with something on your system.

As such, since I don't have access to it, it is very difficult for me to diagnose. You will have to do your own troubleshooting to figure out why this is happening, and all I can do is give you pointers.

I would begin by looking at the applications you have set to start when Windows boots, see if there is something strange there. Then I would also change a text file (e.g.; nx-history.txt) in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Winstep\ folder to see if the change to the text file sticks between reboots or not. This would tell me if the whole folder is being rolled back in time or only the nexus executable....

And so on...

I have one application enabled in my start-up function - Nexus-Ultimate. I don't really see how that single application would cause a problem with itself.

I'm running Windows 7 and utilize Wise Care 365, CCLeaner and Reg Cure Pro regularly (every two weeks at least) to clean up the computer. I have not had any operating problems for a very long time - except that Nexus Ultimate 14.11 has to be re-installed each time I boot.

Oh, and the reason I brought this problem to the Forum was because I have sent numerous emails to the support team for Nexus and have never received any response.

You did well in bringing it to the forums.

However, as you can see by the lack of posts (or any other user replies, I'm sure) regarding this subject, this is, as I said, an issue specific to your system.

If the problem was with Nexus Ultimate itself, there would already be hundreds of posts here from people complaining about that same issue.

*Something* in your system is reverting either the Nexus Ultimate executable or the contents of the whole Winstep folder to the previous version when you reboot. It's almost like you're performing a System Restore on reboot - however, I also have no idea what might be causing such a weird issue (never heard of anything similar, in fact, be it Winstep related or not).

I would like to help you figure out and solve the problem, but without direct access to your system, there isn't much I can do other than giving you some troubleshooting pointers (i.e.; what I might do if I was in your case and the PC in question was mine).

Something else to try: after updating to v14.11, go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Winstep\ and right click the Nexus-ultimate.exe file. Select Properties from the right-click context menu and then click the Details tab in the dialog that pops up. What does it say in the File Version field? It should say 14.11.0.1005.

Now reboot your system and do the same. What is the File Version now?

Try the things I already suggested and post back the results.

Doing what you suggested, after rebooting and then re-installing the update, I clicked on the dock control icon and then chose Info/Version and there it lists the File Version as 14.11.1007 - But when I go to C:Program Files (x86)/Winstep and right click on Nexus-Ultimate.exe and choose Details, there it lists File Version as 12.2.0.1005

Each time that I rebooted and reinstalled the upgrade before, I would simply check the Info/Version profile by clicking on the dock control icon only. After rebooting, but prior to reinstalling, that Version Information window would show the 12.2.0.1005 version - then after reinstalling, it would show the 14.11.1007 version. Of course I would assume that the new version had been installed.

Do you know what this is beginning to seem like to me? Like you somehow installed Nexus Ultimate twice into two different folders.

Ok, try the following: open your C:\ drive folder and Search the disk for nexus-ultimate.exe - see how many entries you get for it and where they are located.

Jorge - I find that the nexus-ultimate.exe file is in six different folders:

Backup (C:\Documents and Settings\Public\Public Documents...)
Winstep (C;\Program Files (x86)) modified 3/28/2012
Winstep (C:\Program Files (x86)\Winstep) modified 3/28/2012
Winstep (C:\Program Files\Application Dock) modified 10/20/2010
Winstep (C:\Program Files\Nexus Ultimate) modified 11/5/2014
Backup (C:\USers\Public\Public Documents\Winstep) modified 11/5/2014

I would just click on "Next" when the installation window suggested where to install the files to, and the most recent one I noticed was to the C:\program Files\Nexus Ultimate folder. - Larry

Heh... let me guess... your system was upgraded to Windows 7 from an XP installation.

In any case, I could say, run MSConfig (start menu - run - type "msconfig"). Then go to the "Startup" tab and somewhere in the startup list, you should see the Winstep entry, along with the "command" path. There, you'll see which .exe is being summoned on startup.
As a remedy, I'd suggest backing up your Winstep settings and any customisations you might have done and doing a complete uninstall -- without re-installing 14.11 before.
I don't know what extra themes and such you might have installed, but these can be backed up too.
Then, go to C:\Program Files\ and delete all leftovers, like \Application Dock\ or anything else, where you can find Winstep files.
Last step, reinstall 14.11 and restore your backed up settings and files.

The issue here is probably that you've installed Nexus on a different, non-standard location and what happens is, reinstalling the update will just force-exit old Nexus, install the new Nexus on the default location and run it from there, without deleting or updating the old installation. Then on reboot, the system will be set to execute Nexus from the old installation, ignoring the new one.

I suppose that could be considered a bug, since Nexus (or Winstep in general) should also be checking the registry entry, not only for the "Nexus" or "Winstep" entry, but also making sure that the command path is the correct one -- which it obviously is not doing.

Jorge?

Jorge - Thank you so much for all the time and patience you gave me on my problem. I followed your suggestions in the last post reply and it worked. When I rebooted, after making all the changes, it started up with the proper 14.11 version. And you had been correct, I upgraded from XP to 7 and at the time everything worked fine, so there was no reason to suspect that a year or so later I would start experiencing this. But anyways, thanks again - Larry

That was actually Skagon's post, who is the resident moderator, I can only take credit for pointing you out in the right direction. :)

Jorge?

Not a bug, the Winstep updater uses the path the application is running from, but the installer itself (InnoSetup) uses an installer specific path in the Registry setup when the application was last installed.
