ok well if i liftclick the shelf does collapse, if i rightclick nothing happens. if you want i can make new backups and upload them.

When you click the right mini-tab of a collapsed Shelf, the Shelf un-collapses (and not auto-collapses, like you said) and stays up.

ok i think i see what you're saying. for that the tabs in a collapsed shelf would have to be seen not hidden. i have them set not to be seen when the shelf is collapsed.

See? The right mini-tab feature does work as advertised provided it is visible when you collapse the Shelf. You were leading me on a wild goose chase, as I suspected. :D

Actually, and to be a bit pedantic here, firstly it's the right button (or minitab) *unless* you've switched the minitabs, in which case it's the left one. Secondly, you can't press the "right" button if you've set the shelf to *not* show the tabs when collapsed.
So... it's not a bad idea to have a "keep deployed" button. On the other hand, you could just change the behaviour of the "right" button. Like, if the shelf is set to "autohide", there's little point in having a button to collapse it. Just move the mouse away, and it will, some seconds earlier or later. However, you could do with the same button as "keep deployed", since you may want to. If, on the other hand, the shelf is *not* on autohide, you don't need a "keep deployed" button, since that's what it will do anyway... *then* what you need is a "collapse now" button.
So... there... :)

like i said i figured it was because i have the tabs set not to show, and checking the hide or collapse automatically only when other windows have the focus did the trick for my needs.

I agree with this request - a toggle feature would prove quite useful for a tablet computer with a touch screen interface where you don't have a mouse and therefore may not want the dock to auto-hide after a given delay. The toggle hotkey could be mapped to one of the hardware buttons on the tablet bezel, for example. In such a setup, the conditions for the dock auto-hiding should be either pressing the activation toggle again, or launching a selection/application on the dock itself.

Sorry, Chucky ended up making me forget to reply to your post.

Your reasoning makes sense.

Something else I'm adding, because of touch tablets, is a 'edge buffer zone':

As it is, a edge bump at the top of the screen will only be triggered if the y position of the mouse pointer is exactly equal to the top screen coordinate (i.e.; normally zero). With a mouse there's nothing easier or faster, just 'throw' the mouse up, the screen edge will stop it from moving further.

However, if you are using your finger on a touch tablet, the coordinates of the spot your finger is pointing to might not translate exactly to the very top of the screen edge. So, by adding an optional, user-defined, 'buffer zone' you can make the edge bump trigger if your finger is anywhere within a, say, 8 pixel distance of the top screen edge.
