Hi, I just upgraded to 11.10 - super excited to try the new launch effects. But nothing seems to "take" - everytime I select something, it gives me nothing when I actually click on an icon...

I do remember having selected "No bounce effect" in 11.6 - I think it was called something like that. But I can't find that setting anymore. Do you think it is still turned on somewhere and is causing it to cancel any/all Launch effects?

Thanks for your help!

Are we talking about Nexus free, Nexus Ultimate or Xtreme?

Can you please post a screenshot of the Effects tab in Preferences?

Nexus Ultimate

here's a shot attached.

Also, FYI, somewhat related. I tried to enable "water ripple" effect via the right click context menus (right click on dock), and it crashed my Nexus dock badly. I couldn't get it to start up at all after that (it would crash each time I tried to start it.) I had to uninstall, then reinstall the Nexus dock. Once I did - I tried out the Launch effects and they worked just fine. When I restored my backup (fortunately, made literally minutes before the mega-crash scenario), the launch effects no longer work.

I could also attach my backup settings file, if that would be of any help.

Heyah, and sorry for the late reply, had to look into this first.

So, we have two problems: the water ripple effect crashing your dock, and the Launch effects not taking on your system.

Needless to say I tried your effects combination here and everything seems to be working fine. No crashes either when enabling water ripple, so it must be some kind of weird settings combination.

Yes, a backup of your settings would probably help.

Also, if you enable the water ripple effect again, does it still cause a crash? Before doing this, and so you don't have to re-install Nexus Ultimate again, open the Windows Registry Editor, navigate to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\WinSTEP2000\NeXuS

then click File -> Export. If something goes wrong, double clicking the exported Registry file will restore your previous settings.

Also, what theme are you using for your dock(s)?

Using the right click context menus, as I did before, nothing crashes the dock. However, it is interesting to note the bottom option of "Nexus->Effects" reads "Disable Icon Bounce on Launch". It doesn't change, regardless of how many times I select it. I'm almost certain that this is how I disabled it in v11.6. But now the menu seems to think it's enabled (it's not - I get no bounce)

Here's the backup file. (not really a .zip - just rename to .wbk. Couldn't post a .wbk file)

Doh! Forgot to update the menus to reflect the other available effects!

So, did the backup settings file help you pinpoint anything?
I'm comfortable manually editing settings files, registry entries, etc.
(do a bit of computer programming myself - shameless self-promotion: http://www.projectaon.org/staff/david)
So, if I need to go in and change a setting somewhere, just let me know!
Thanks!

Oops, sorry for the delay in replying.

Looking at that backup, I can see the Launch effect for your first dock (which has 10 items, first item being 'Common Folders') is set to AfterGlow. I don't see anything obvious that might cause the problem. Nobody else has complained about this either (so far), which makes it a tough one to crack.

Looking at your Preferences screenshot above, however, I did notice that your screen DPI is NOT set to 100%. It's a long shot, but have you tried setting your screen DPI to 100% and see what happens?

Also, is the Attention effect working? You can see it in action by, for instance, putting a weather module icon on the dock and then making it check the weather via the right click context menu. The attention effect will play briefly while the module connects to the Internet.

Sorry for the long delay in replying. While I have not set my DPI back to 100% to see what happens (I *need* 125%, so even if that made it work, it would be an unusable solution), upon the initial reinstallation of Nexus Ultimate, the selection effects worked great, just as expected. And that's with the 125% DPI... doesn't seem like that's the culprit.

In that file I backed up, is there a certain range of the file that is only specifically the information on items on the dock (as opposed to the settings for Nexus itself, which I know are also contained in there....) What I'm wondering is whether it would be possible to:
1) do a fresh install of Nexus (so effects work)
2) backup "fresh" settings from the new installation
3) copy the appropriate range from old backup file (ONLY the items on the dock part of the file) into the same location of the new backup file
4) do a "restore" using the modified file
5) voila - hopefully all my dock items are in place and the effects work! (I hope!)

I can always tweak the Nexus program settings easily - MUCH more easily that reconstructing my custom dock item layout (with nested docks as many as 5 deep in places, and lots of icon customization. I really don't want to do that again!)

Let me know if you think that might work!
Thanks!

Okay, I feel a little silly. I installed the new beta, no changes. I then tried creating a "new" dock, put a simple shortcut in it to load the sound volume control, and voila! it worked just as expected.
I then realized that maybe I was seeing the effect because the dock was always still visible (as opposed to the setting I have on my regular dock, which hides it when something is launched!) Sure enough, when I turned off the "hide automatically" feature, I could see the launch effect.

HOWEVER, one reason that I suspected something could be wrong is that I have my main dock loaded with sub-docks, and they have sub-docks of their own... when I click on a subdock's main icon, nothing happens. Perhaps this is intentional, but I'd sure love to see the animation happen on *any* dock item when I click on it... not just a final shortcut to a program or something.

So, is that the intended behavior (no animation on a sub-dock's main icon when clicked?)

Ok, interesting combination of issues here.

First, and this is something I really want to point out, is that, once again, the devil is in the details: the reason I couldn't reproduce the issue with the launch effect not working here was because I didn't know you had the dock set to collapse automatically on launch, and you never mentioned that either. :D

There are so many possible setting combinations that it would never have occurred to me to try it with that setting enabled. I imagine very few people have the dock set to collapse immediately after launching an item too.

The missing CRITICAL bits of information are also responsible for problems such as the one reported in this post HERE.

Anyway, before someone else accuses me again of being helpful to users but not very friendly, I'm not saying this to give you a hard time , I'm just pointing out to everyone how important it is to mention as many details as possible about any unusual settings one might be using.

So, before the new launch effects were implemented, there was a 'icon bounce' effect that could also be turned off. It it was on, the dock would indeed wait for the icon to stop bouncing before hiding itself.

With the new launch effects, a bug was introduced where this no longer happened for ANY of the effects, including the old bounce effect.

Now that I know what the problem is, I've fixed it here for next release: the launch effect (whatever it is) will now finish playing before the dock auto-hides.

Furthermore, clicking anywhere on the dock while this effect is playing will ABORT the auto-hide action. This can be useful if you want to launch more than one item, or right click to edit an icon, etc...

I've also changed the code so that opening a sub-dock also plays the Launch effect animation on the sub-dock's parent icon, per your request. :D

Been a while since I checked the forum! Thanks Jorge, you are awesome! So this change will be applied when the next version comes out? I'm on 11.12.0985 (beta, I think?)

(Edit: tried the 12.1 beta 5 just now. Works great!)
