In the icon Browser to customize a tray icon, click the little Home icon in the top right corner of the dialog so it lights up, then click the Browse button. There should be a Systray folder visible now... go into that folder.

For some reason I'm having issues with the task icons sticking. They revert back automatically to the original in some cases. There's one that no matter how many time I try and change it, it won't stick.

Woops, sorry.....tray icons. I did a fresh install on a new build with win 7. I had saved my settings in a folder on my storage drive. After installing Winstep extreme on my new build I restored my original settings. Now I have all these orphaned entries, and new entrys for the same icons.

Any way to just clean it all out and start fresh?

Well, the problem is that tray icon customization is very complicated, for instance, it depends on associating a user defined icon to a *specific* tray icon image, not to an application, since tray icons originally do not have unique identifiers (i.e.; a number that would let the Tray Manager say with 100% confidence 'Ah, this is the icon for the Muted Volume tray icon').

Each new original tray icon that the Tray Manager encounters for the first time is processed so an hash is made from that specific image. It is this hash number, together with the name of the application that generated that tray icon, that becomes that icon's 'unique identifier' and is used to create and maintain an association with the user-defined tray icons.

The whole thing depends on creating and maintaining a cache of original tray icon images, as well as other IDs stored in another list.

When you move to another system, this tray cache is initially empty, since the Tray Manager can only add items to it as it runs into them (e.g.; you will only be able to customize a battery empty tray icon when the battery is empty and the Tray Manager sees that icon for the first time. It is only then that that specific icon is added to the cache and to the list of 'known tray icons')

Also, besides this tray icon image cache list, which is stored under

C:\Users\Public\Documents\WinStep\Systray\

there is another list stored in the Windows Registry that holds needed associated information. Synchronization being lost between these two lists can also result in 'orphaned' tray icons and tray icons 'jumping out' of their groups (for instance, a battery icon appearing on its own in the Tray Icon Customization dialog instead of together with all the other different Battery Tray icons), although the latter is usually temporary and ends up correcting itself.

So, yeah, it's probably better to start afresh. :)

Open Preferences, go to the Advanced tab, click Troubleshooting Options, then Reset Tray Cache.

resetting the tray cache didn't work. I thought it did, but icons started reverting back to originals again, then they won't change no matter how many times I try telling them to.

I think I may just restore the image I created right before installing Winstep, and just start completely over on everything after reinstalling. Importing all my old settings over from my previous build was a bad idea I guess.

Before you take drastic measures, lets first try to understand what might be going on, ok? :D

When you say 'start reverting back to the originals', exactly what do you mean by that. Step by step, describe to me what you did and what happened next please.

For example, the action center flag I replaced with a cool blue png icon. As I'm setting up other icons, it switched back to the original and when I tried switching it back to the blue one, it just stayed the original. Same thing happened with my network icon.

Details are everything... you see things clearly in your head because you experienced those things yourself, but I haven't, so I will have to make what to you might sound like a lot of dumb questions:

When you say 'switched back to the original' do you mean the icons in the actual system tray or in the Tray Customization dialog?

If the former, what about the entry in the Tray Customization dialog? Did it remain customized? What happened to that same entry if you exited the Tray Customization dialog and opened it again?

I'm having lunch with my parents, so let me get back with this when I return. I appreciate your quick help, but I want to be able to dedicate proper time with this.

Bon apetit! :)

I'm re-organizing everything module related in the code so it's easier in the future to add more modules (and so I can add a new battery module now). :)

After restoring my image, and reinstalling Winstep Extreme, the tray icon customization is working perfectly. :D
