Hi,
I'm new to workshelf (2days) and absolutely love it. I'll be registering soon, however I have 2 quick questions:
In perferences I chose Hide Desktop Icons and it works fine, except on the startup of Workshelf. The old desktop Icons still display for about 1 minute - 30 sec. I find this distracting and unsightly. Maybe it has to do with the startup of my other necessary programs taking a while.

1. Is it possible to not display the old desktop icons? Or, what happens if I reorganize/minimalize or delete the desktop Icon shortcuts.? Will they be removed from my Workshelf Shelf Tabs?

2. I have two computers. Desk and Notebook. Presntly I have the Workshelf Trial on the Desktop for evaluation prior to registering. When I register how do I also install and register Workshelf intact w/current theme and preferences on my Notebook Computer? Or do I need to purchase 2 Registrations? Also, when I click "Buy Now" on Workself, I get price and options for WinStep - Extreme - NextStep, etc... I'm confused. I only want to use and register Workshelf alone at its price. What is the Workshelf price? Where is its single program download/registration offer.

Thanks in Advance - Lindsey

WorkShelf v1.9?! Go download the final of Winstep Xtreme (just released!) and install that on top of your current Winstep installation. You will be thanking me for it, believe me. :D

Anyway, WorkShelf does not touch your desktop icons in any way ... All it does is 'hide' them from view when it starts up. Now, on SYSTEM start up, WorkShelf hasn't loaded yet, and is scheduled by Windows to be loaded along with all the other start up programs. Until it loads, your desktop icons will be visible. I find this a really minor annoyance, since the 'reboot required every day' days are long gone with Windows 2000 and XP.

At system start up? The short answer is No. There is a possibility, but this would require enabling Windows Active Desktop and this would really create more problems than it solves.

If you remove the shortcuts from your desktop, they will be removed from WorkShelf's Desktop shelf too, since the later is basically a 'view' onto the desktop folder. This said, you can still:

a) Create a folder in your hard drive and move all your desktop icons into it. Then you can create a new 'Show Folder' type of shelf pointing to this folder you created (right click on a tab, select 'Add Shelf', then 'Show Folder Shelf' from the Shelf Type pull up menu, then type in the path to the folder you created).

b) Create a new Regular shelf, drag all your desktop shortcuts to this shelf and then delete the shortcuts from your desktop.

However, if I were you I would do none of the above. Keep in mind that new programs will keep on adding stuff to your desktop, etc... If you think about it, desktop icons appearing briefly during system start-up is really a minor annoyance.

First install Winstep Xtreme on your Notebook computer. Then make a backup of your WorkShelf settings in the Desktop computer (right click on the left mini-tab and select 'Backup' from the context menu), save the file into a floppy (or somewhere you can access from the notebook if you have a local area network connecting the two computers) and use it to Restore on your Notebook.

No. A single registration is quite enough, thank you. We're not Microsoft.

Not anymore. Go check again. Winstep Full Pak (and WorkShelf as a stand-alone program) has been replaced by something called Winstep Xtreme, which is a complete and integrated Workspace environment (a bit like MS Office, with NextSTART and WorkShelf being the WinWord, Excel, etc... components). NextSTART and WorkShelf are still there, but the new versions are light years away from those of Winstep Full Pak.

I think if you take a look at http://www.winstep.net/news.asp you will be able to understand better what happened and how the applications evolved.

As I stated, WorkShelf is no longer available as a stand alone program, you will have to purchase Winstep Xtreme. The price difference is only $10 though (from $29.95 to $39.95) and well worth it! Even if you decide not to use NextSTART, I'm willing to bet you are going to love the new NeXuS component (the dock). NeXuS alone is more than worth the price difference, as I suspect you will find out!

Keep me posted, Lindsay, and thanks for your interest in Winstep applications. :D
