After nearly 14 years using Winstep Xtreme, I'm losing faith and looking elsewhere for viable alternatives. In fact, I've come to realize that, other than WorkShelf, my most often used Winstep application is Start Menu Organizer (a reflexive OCD thing). Given certain errors are starting to pop up (no doubt some self-inflicted based on my current set up and use of other potentially conflicting software), especially in WorkShelf, I am seriously considering moving on.
That said, I think it's helpful to understand what Winstep Xtreme does. Without regurgitating the website, I think it boils down to:
Tabbed docks
Floating docks
Alternative start menu
Modules
Start menu organizer
Of course, users can customize how the docks, alternate start menu, and modules (somewhat) look.
So what are the alternatives? For me, I use the following:
Rainmeter: covers modules and docks. It's very customizable and free, with an active community that shares its creations.
Listary: covers program launching and quick access to specific folders/files/applications, to include integration with file open and save dialogs. It's a freemium (one-time cost) application that is not in current active development because the author is apparently currently involved in critical COVID-related work. That said, the program works well for what I require.
DisplayFusion: covers window spacing, alignment, and a bunch more. It's another freemium (one-time cost, lifetime updates) application. I previously used NextStart's "reserve screen space" function, but it consistently faltered given my laptop and external monitor configuration. I finally gave up and looked elsewhere.
Special mention:
Directory Opus. This is a high-end (and high-priced) file manager that just happens to have customizable toolbar functionality (including floating docks). Although not as customizable or "pretty" as WorkShelf or Nexus, it is quite functional and often fits my workflow better than Winstep's products.
NOTE: I found every one of the paid programs, to include Winstep Xtreme, at
BitsDuJour on sale at one point or another.
Since first purchasing Winstep Xtreme, I have invested nearly $200 in the subscription, in part because I want to support small business owners like Jorge. Looking at how I use Winstep Xtreme now, along with its development history, I just don't think I can do it anymore.
Finally, taking forum activity into consideration, I'm struck by the fact that I am one of the top 20 posters. I lurk almost daily (again, OCD), but rarely post. Yet there I am. Digging into the rest of the top 20, nearly half haven't posted or even visited the forums in years. I greatly respect the few who continue to stick with it. I hope it works out for you.
