If you are not seeing the grouped window thumbnails and instead get the grouped tasks menu on mouseover, that's because you have the 'Open Group on Mouseover' option selected (NextSTART Preferences -> Tasklist and Systray Preferences). Just disable that option. :D

but how should a user know this?

I think, it make sense, that if i select the Windows 7 Style, that all parameters are set so that i'm getting the Windows 7 Style. I think, that was my biggest problem.

That option is disabled by default, so new users won't run into the problem you did. And if they then enable that option, they will know immediately what caused the change.
