I'm now trying to mimic the good old NEXTSTEP dock with the nexus dock. Works quite well, but I couldn't yet manage to change the 'Nexus' icon of the root element of the dock. Is there a way doing so?

Again, the fact that you can't change the NeXuS control icon (except for the color) is by design: it has to do with branding: users like to post screenshots of their desktops in various forums/web sites. The unchangeable control icon makes sure NeXuS is instantly recognizable and not confused with any of the other docks out there.
