Chucky, Phred is not a troll.

Glad you recalled it. I had a feeling you forgot when I didn't get a reply and figured you thought I was off my rocker thinking what in the heck is he on about? Who the heck is Carrie?!!
(For inquiring minds, I'm speaking about Carrie Fisher of Star Wars fame).

Just in case you don't know, you can disable or delete any of the Hotspots. However, Jorge recommended that 00 and 01 should be left enabled so I took his advice.

Do you fully understand how to use Hotspots? There are certain things that cannot be done unless you choose the correct Action function. For example, when to chose Run an Internal Command, Display a Menu Showing the Contents of a Folder, or, Run a Program.

I read up a little and it sounds good. However, my concern is that it will interfere with my middle-click settings for Xtreme. Have you tried setting a Hotspot middle-click command yet? I have it set to open the NextSTART context menu. Speaking of context menus, I think you ought to read this thread. It will save you a lot of headaches. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8551&p=24240#p24240

P.S. That basketball players thing is something else!! Great video! I didn't see it LOL!! That's amazing! Now I understand the correlation between you not noticing the NextStart and WorkShelf headings and the video. :D

Actually, Phred, what you posted in your second screenshot is not the NextStart bar, it's just a dock.
Maybe you've disabled the NextStart bar altogether? Or maybe minimised it somewhere?

About the hotspots, apart from where the settings are, I'm afraid I can't help much more, since I don't use NextStart or hotspots at all.

Oh, and actually, honestly, I *did* notice *it* in the basketball vid. I suppose the lesson of the story is that most people *wouldn't* notice?

So, back to the config dialogues, I too think that it's confusing. Not the dialogues themselves, but the way they all look identical. Like, the general "Preferences" of the WorkShelf (that includes the shelf itself and all docks) looks the same as the "Properties" of a dock or the shelf. Even I get confused sometimes (in the beginning, I did all the time) since I'm waiting to see certain things and can't find them; then it clicks and I'm thinking "wait a minute..." and notice it's the "Properties" not the "Preferences" or vice versa.
I think it would be better if they were made more distinct and maybe change it to something like "General Preferences" and "Dock Properties" or "Shelf Properties". It wouldn't hurt to make the dialogues themselves more different either, as well as the NextStart "Preferences" (yet another "Preferences" option).
I can definitely see how users, especially new to the programme, would be confused, as there's options here, options there, preferences, properties, things that are common here and there, like the "Themes" tab which confuses things even more, all wrapped up in very similar "packages".
Not to mention the confusion that arises from the different "Preferences" in the same "suite" which is the Winstep Xtreme. Like you, I bet there are a lot of people to whom it's not directly evident that Workshelf and NextStart are two separate entities, each with its own separate "Preferences" and settings.
And then, there's the common elements, like the right-click menus from Workshelf, whose theme is being controlled by NextStart, or the desktop hotspots whose behaviour is again configured from within NextStart, or the docks which, albeit visually separate, are all different manifestations of the Workshelf programme.

P.S.
I forgot to say something else: to both Phred and Chuck, guys, take it easy, please? Phred, stop picking on him about the sig; if you don't like it, block it -- that's what I've done (no offense, Chucky) through AdBlock and never said anything on it. And Chuck, just let a thing or two drop, from time to time. Yeah, it was uncalled for but you can't have an argument of one; just don't answer.

Chucky, until the following by Skagon I had no clue.

Skagon is right, just let bygones be bygones. I usually don't deem someone a troll unless they come on a forum only to deliberately antagonize, or start feuds. Usually they don't contribute anything positive to the forum and their only goal is to see feuding.

The other where someone could be deemed a troll is when basically they target one person in particular. I guess you feel this is what he did and why you called him a troll.

Chucky, I'm going to say something and I hope you take it as constructive criticism and not end up getting mad and call me a troll.

At times you are very heavy-handed in your comments and tend to pounce unnecessarily, something you've accused Jorge of. Sometimes diplomacy is best on a forum.

Now hopefully we can get back on topic. :)

Phred - I don't think of Nextstart as a dock (though I can see that I could). In the prefs dialog go to the taskbar tab. You can switch on the Nextstart taskbar and hide the Win taskbar and configure from there with the various buttons on that tab. And you can configure it to completely hide taskbars and use hotspots, persistent menus etc etc.
The 'problem' is that with the suite of programs you can achieve a desired result in a number of ways. I use Nextstart heavily, Nexus sparingly and Workshelf not at all but I'm sure there are people doing the opposite, and all variations inbetween.
And for the long-time users the evolution of the suite has been helpful - it started with Nextstart, added Workshelf then Nexus so the learning process was staggered. Starting out with Xtreme isn't easy.

windy / skagon if it had been the first time i would of left it alone, but it's not. it's at least ther 3rd time. phred skagon is right you have nexus in that screenshot not nextstart. go to you startmenu, winstep and list here what you have in that folder. if you want my help in the future refrain from posting bs.

even though it's a bit off topic neurotox is right, when you think about it nextstart isn't a dock.

So.... frustrating.
What you say, Skagon, reflects what I see as a complete disorganisation in design of the Winstep suite. That is, IMHO.
I posted above what I thought was a realisation: that NextStart <==> Dock. How wrong can you be?
So, yes, gentlemen, I hardly understand this product at all; but not without trying.

Starting at the end: cChild, the list you request is:
FontBrowser
NextStart
ReadMe
Start Menu Organiser
Winstep Translator Helper
Winstep Xtreme
WorkShelf.
HTH.
My guess is that I run docks from Nextstart and some hotspots from Workshelf, not Shelf, but Workshelf.

Neurtox, yes, Nextstart seems not to be a dock - but as I type this I wonder what it is, and Help is virtually non-existent. And you can't search for the product names in the forum 'because they're too common'!! (I'm also thinking that this would make a classic MBA case study on how not to present a well-programmed piece of software.)
I keep trying to define Workshelf and Nextstart, but I find distinctions without differences. Both docks and hotspots are means of launching programs - but they're in separate sub-products. Why..?
'Points of Launch', 'Object Replacements', 'Theme Changers', 'Folder Browsers'... Nothing really satisfies.
We're at similar points, Skagon.
[UPDATE: Neuro: Could Nextstart be, majorly, a taskbar replacement/companion? Latest theory. 'NextTasks', 'GUI++', ScreenPlus'??]

Must go, but I think I'm emerging from the ooze.. BBL.
Windy, thanks for the links to your videos. Any chance of popup captions next time? But I get the idea. Menus look frightening - I rely on Total Commander - and they seem to act completely counter to Fitts Law. Small targets. BBL.

PS cChild, thanks for not quoting unnecessarily.
PPS Skagon, we must discuss AdBlocking pointless graphics some time. Firefox here. (Reverted to 19.0.2)
PPPS Where do I find where screenshots go? Don't tell me where they are: where do I find where it says where they go? Search hasn't helped. . . .
PPPPS Glad you liked the test. Perception is everything..

Phred, i just wanted the list to confirm that you are running xtreme and not one of the other products. as for search on the forum it's the worst i've seen on any forum. as for quoting or not quoting that is only your opinion and still unneeded.

Just a quickie, here:

Yes, NextStart is indeed a taskbar replacement. With its pros and cons, as with everything. Personally, I'm content using the built-in Windows taskbar in legacy mode (i.e. small icon and text) and replaced the idiotic start menu with Classic Shell. But people have their preferences, I guess.
It is worrying that you can't see the NextStart taskbar, though. Hidden it somewhere?

Docks are 'entities' from which you launch programmes or perform other actions, like internal (to Winstep) applets, internal (to Windows) commands or even shortcuts of hotspots (more on that shortly). Everything, however, on a dock -- or the shelf, which is a glorified dock with tabs -- is represented with an icon, clicking on which performs the desired action, which in most cases is the launch of a programme. Oh yes, and the 'shelf' is part of the WorkShelf. Basically, WorkShelf is responsible for the 'shelf' and any and all docks. Note that you can have only one shelf, but multiple docks.
Hotspots, on the other hand, are more event-oriented. For example, a hotspot could activate with the bump of the mouse pointer on a corner or side of the screen, in which case you can select the action: load a programme, execute an internal command, et cetera. Other hotspot manifestations are a "button" on the desktop (essentially a glorified icon), a key combination (which can be assigned to every other activation method) or a button on the NextStart taskbar. And, of course, any hotspot can have a shortcut icon on any dock or the shelf. In essence, the hotspot is a rather generic term for any event that can signal the execution of any programme or command.
Note: to my knowledge, the only programme that can have hotspots is NextStart. I don't use hotspots either, but from experience, I don't see hotspots anywhere unless NextStart is running. And the only programme which includes hotspots in its properties, is NextStart.

Other strange terms can actually be part of the Windows lingo and not native to Winstep. Others, of course, are native to Winstep and... well... it needs some getting used to. You have to become familiar with the way Winstep does things and then the terms will make sense.

About the PS, I run Firefox as well (well, Waterfox). AdBlock Plus is a very popular add-on and once it's installed, apart from all the junk flash adverts and crap that it blocks, you can right-click on any offending image and select "Block image". That's all there is to it.

yeah just like i did to skagon's avatar, LMFAO. sorry skagon having a little fun with you.

EDIT:

looks like the fun backfired, rightclicking your avatar not only hid it but all of the screenshots on the forum.

Phred, I've made a ton of screenshots to help you and other users get a better understanding of what to look for to configure Xtreme.

I don't know if you've seen this video, but it is part of the original one that is on YouTube that Jorge posted on the Winstep Themes page. This link is also in the Winstep Xtreme-Planet Background thread. It shows some of the features using the context menu. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kr8UPacC ... e=youtu.be JUST EDITED THIS LINK. HAD THE THREAD LINK BY MISTAKE.

Go to this thread to see the screenshots I posted. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4530&start=15
