I set up my Nexus dock just fine with the folder I want. I then put shortcuts on my desktop to each of the apps I want in those folders. But when I dragged the shortcuts to the folder on Nexus, I got the following error. Looking up that error on Google didn't help and didn't find it on a search here on the boards.

I'm on a new Lenovo laptop with Windows 10.

Any ideas?

WINDOWS ERROR:

Error 0x8000405 Unspecified error

Hi Mikey!

Either you are misusing the word 'folders' here, or I have no idea what you are trying to do, sorry. :(

What do you mean by 'I set up my Nexus dock just fine with the folder I want'? You mean you installed Nexus to a folder other than the default C:\Program Files (x86)\Winstep\ ?

Also, what do you mean by 'when I dragged the shortcuts to the folder on Nexus' ? You mean you were trying to drag the shortcuts to the folder where you installed Nexus instead of the actual dock?

A screenshot of your desktop with an explanation of what you are trying to do might help me understand better.

Ah, I can attach. Duh.

When I set up a new dock item, I set it up as a FOLDER. Now I'm trying to drag the shortcuts to programs into that folder on the dock.

I'm a Dell Dock user so I thought this would work like that with a category icon with progrmas or files linked under each category/folder. Does that not work here?

Ok, thanks for the screenshot and the description, I now see what you are trying to accomplish.

The Dell dock was an OEM dock made by Stardock for Dell computers. Even though it was free for Dell users, Dell paid Stardock a lot of money for it.

The free version of Nexus does not allow you to have sub-categories (called sub-docks under Nexus), and it only supports a single dock.

You can add folders to the free dock, but when you drop files into them those files will actually be moved/copied to the target folder (and my guess is that even that is failing in your case because of some read/write file system permissions issue). The contents of the folder will NOT be displayed as a sub-dock when you click on it, as it would happen (I think) on the Dell dock. Instead, clicking on the folder icon on the dock will open the folder in an Explorer window (or optionally a menu).

To do what you want you need Nexus Ultimate, the paid version of the Nexus: not only does it support nested sub-docks/categories, it supports multiple docks too (among many other features, such as a tabbed dock called the 'Shelf').

Awesome. I've purchased and installed Ultimate. However I can't find anything about how to attached a shortcuts to subdocks. Not in the edit tab or on your site. Created a subdock and am trying to drag and drop a shortcut on it but it just makes it an item on the dock. Help...?

You are misusing terms and you're going to end up confusing us both lol

What do you call a 'shortcut' and what is the difference between your 'shortcut' and an item on the dock?

Shortcut refers to the windows term. I have shortcuts to all the programs and files sitting on my desktop ready to drag to the dock in a subdock. But that doesn't work. And like I said I can't find any instructions on how to do that. Please point me to them. Thanks

Answering my questions fully would help. :)

Anyway, I think I understand what you mean now. You said 'but it just makes it an item on the dock'. For me a sub-dock is also 'the dock', and because of your first post, I was under the impression that the problem was that Nexus was not properly accepting shortcuts dragged into it.

You are still trying to use Nexus as if it was the Dell dock, but they work in different ways (for instance, under Nexus a sub-dock icon can also 'double-up' as a shortcut, so dropping an item into it to add it to the sub-dock does not work).

Ok, here is how to do create a new sub-dock and drag & drop items into it:

1. Right click on the main dock, select 'Insert New Dock Item', then 'Sub-Dock'.

2. This creates a new 'sub-dock' icon on the main dock which, when clicked on, will now open an *empty* sub-dock. To add items to this sub-dock you either

a) Drag a shortcut over the sub-dock icon on the main dock and *hold* it over that icon for a second. This will automatically open the empty (at this point) sub-dock, and then you can simply drop the shortcut into the empty sub-dock.

OR

b) First you open the sub-dock by clicking on its icon in the main dock, and THEN you drag the shortcut you want to the now open sub-dock.

Please note that sub-docks can be nested if you want (i.e.; a sub-dock can itself open/hold other sub-docks and so on), and the same process above also applies.

Also, you can change the icon used to display the sub-dock (normally a red Nexus one) to anything else you want as you would any other dock item. By either

a) Right clicking the dock item, selecting 'Dock Entry Properties' and then clicking the 'Change Icon Button'

OR

b) The much faster and simpler method of drag & dropping an ICO, PNG or TIF image file smack into the dock item (e.g.; as you were trying to do to populate your sub-docks, except that Nexus interprets dropping these three file types as you wanting to change that item's icon by drag & drop).

Something else you should be aware of regarding drag & drop in Nexus: say you have a shortcut to WinWord on your dock. If you drag a .txt file and drop it into the WinWord shortcut in the dock, Nexus will open the .txt file in WinWord.

Likewise, if you have a shortcut to a folder on the dock and you drop a *file* into it, the file will be actually copied or moved into that folder.

So be careful, as Nexus is *fully* drag & drop compliant.

Because of this you also cannot delete dock items by simply dragging them *off/away from* the dock as it happens with most other docks. If you drag & drop a dock item into a folder (and the Windows Desktop is a folder), it will create a shortcut to that item in the folder (assuming you are dragging a shortcut to a program or file). So, if you drag a dock item away from the dock (usually over the Desktop) and then drop it, instead of that item being deleted from the dock what you end up with is a shortcut to it on the Desktop.

This might seem a bit un-intuitive at first, but you will soon notice it allows you to do things other docks cannot.

To delete a dock item you either right click it and select 'Remove from dock' or you drag and drop the item to the Recycle Bin module *in the dock*.

I understand this might all be a bit confusing to you at first since you are still working under the simpler 'Dell dock' mind-set, but stick to it and the alternate Nexus way of doing things will soon become second nature.
