I just installed Winstep and am playing around with it. I do like it a lot, but there is something I don't like about NextStart and I'm sure the solution is right there in one of the settings, but I can't figure out where.

Here's what happens. When I click on the start button, the menus pop up as they should. Now, as I roll the mouse up looking for a particular item, all of the items I have rolled over completely disappear, or rather turn dark. It doesn't seem to be a bug, but rather something in the settings. I want everything to show and only highlight the item that the mouse is currently on top of.

I hope I'm describing this correctly. Would someone please direct me to the setting I should tweak? Or let me know if I should post a screenshot to make this more clear.

EDIT: No change on this problem, but I'm also trying to get the clock back on the systray, and I can't find the setting I clicked on to hide it. Help, please?

Thanks.

Nora

Hi Nora!

That actually sounds like a bug, not one in NextSTART but rather in your video driver... However, couple of questions:

1 - What NextSTART version are you running? Open NextSTART Preferences and you can see the version number in the lower right corner of the About tab.

2 - What theme are you using?

3 - Does this also happen with other themes? Try the Unlighted theme, for instance, since this theme does not use alpha blended bitmaps.

4 - What video card do you have and have you installed the latest drivers for it?

5 - What Windows version are you running under?

6 - A screenshot is always, always, nice (a picture is worth a thousand words). :D Check out the FAQ right here in this forum for instructions on how to post screenshots here.

As for the systray clock, open NextSTART Preferences, navigate to the Tasklist and Systray Preferences tab (third icon in the icon ribbon at the top), and, in the Systray Section, make sure you have the Systray set to display a button and the 'show clock in button' option selected.

Hi Jorge,

Thank you for the quick reply! The problem may have been specific to the theme, or who knows what it was. I was initially using Aero LowRes, then I changed to another one and the problem was not there. I changed back to Aero LowRes and now it behaved exactly the way I wanted it to!

So I don't know how it got fixed, just that it got fixed!

As to the clock, thanks for holding my hand back to where I needed to be. I originally turned it off thinking that the clock provided by Winstep was enough, but then I missed not seeing the time in the systray when I had open windows.

I like it so far, and it doesn't seem to be a resource hog like WindowBlinds is. I'll explore it further in the next few days.

Thanks.

Nora

Hey Nora! :D

There is no such thing as a clock too many, hehe. Anyway, glad your problem sorted itself out. Go figure, it reminds me of that joke with the three engineers riding in a car that suddenly breaks down and refuses to start:

The electric engineer says: hmmm, it's probably something wrong with the electrical system.

The mechanical engineer says: nah, it's probably something to do with the engine.

and the software engineer says: why don't we just get out of the car and then back in again?

Happy New Year, and feel free to let me know if you have any other issues/doubts with Winstep Xtreme. :D
