I use the Nexus clock on top of everything, so that I always know what time it is. Particularly useful when I'm playing full screen games.

But it stops updating after a while unless I click on it. Is there a way to keep it awake?

This is by design, so Nexus does not use unnecessary resources when the user is playing a full screen game. The idea is that Nexus is running "behind" the full screen game and therefore cannot be seen, so there is no point in wasting CPU cycles animating clocks, etc...

This said, if these Nexus objects are on a secondary monitor (and therefore still visible), they will continue to be updated.

Anyway, you should be able to force Nexus to continue updating the clock by adding each game to the full screen exclusion list (Dock Properties-> Behavior tab -> Activation Settings button -> Full Screen Exclusion List button).

Be warned that this will stop protecting you from accidental dock activations when playing full screen games on that list.
