In the spirit of try-before-you buy, I downloaded the "try before" freeware version.

I have no clue about what to do with it.

The items listed under "Uncategorized" comprise most of the items in the in the root of my Start Menu.

Of the items listed under "Categories" are a few of the other "root" items. Interestingly. those "root" items do correctly show sub-items.

The rest of the "Category Items" have nothing to to with my computer.

With this goofy "organizer," there is nothing that I can "organize." There are no items that I can select and then add or remove without messing up the organization that my Start Menu already has.

I assume that "create," "rename," and "delete" are for users of the Pro version. That's fine. But I won't consider shelling out those bucks for something that can't even properly list what it finds - much less to allow me to "organize."

Perhaps I'm just stupid, or I'm missing something.

Yes, you seem to be missing the point of the free version.

So you think the extra (and empty) Categories at the left that do not correspond to any root folders in your Start Menu are there because the Winstep Start Menu Organizer (WSMO) can't properly list what it finds? :D

Of course not. :D All categories in the left panel are 'suggested' categories for your Start Menu, and they could all be empty. The fact that some of them are not in your case, only proves that the categories are general and useful enough to fit most users.

The idea is for you to move all the items in the right panel (uncategorized items) into the categories in the left panel, until there are no more entries in the right panel.

Opening the Programs folder in your Start Menu would then list only the 10 default categories, with everything else that used to be at the root of your Start Menu being inside them.

If the 10 default categories are not enough for you, then there's always the paid version which allows you to create your own categories and modify or delete the 10 that are suggested by default.
