If you use encryption (SSL) then it will fail due to an old version of SSL implemented. Sorry, this won't be fixed anytime soon either.

If you're not using SSL, please give us a bit more information.

Unfortunately hotmail requires SSL encryption.
SSL is not a protocol for receiving/sending emails purely, it is a protocol to encrypt HTTP, POP3 and IMAP (as well as other protocols) which is more than just changing a port.
The reason that SSL is not available is due to the fact that SSL v2 was implemented but due to some flaws is quite unpopular nowadays and has been replaced by SSL v3. Implementing SSL v3 is a lot more work for one feature, which is why it hasn't been done yet. Keep in mind that there are a lot of applications available for such purposes already and that there is a large to-do list already...

Sorry to disappoint you but yeah, you can't use the email checker feature of Winstep currently.

Just a small correction to this: you certainly *can*, just not with email servers that require encryption (SSL/TLS) - this unfortunately includes Gmail, Hotmail, etc...
